Question: My bf just told me he was bipolar!?
we've been dating for 7 months!.!.!.and he JUST now told me! I'm not mad but what's your opinion!? Don't you think he should have said something sooner!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There is so much stigma that surrounds mental illness, bipolar and schizophrenia in particular, it's understandable!. I mean, a whole lot of ppl would never give a person a chance if they knew!. And, there's the fear of rejection that knowledge causes!. Sorry, I can understand!. I personally wouldn't go seven months, but I know that I wouldn't say a thing until I knew the relationship was serious and then a little more!.
Anyway, that's not today!. Today the issues for you to consider are how you really feel about this guy (same as any guy), and whether or not he's med compliant and serious about managing his illness for life!. Ppl with bipolar who are med responsive and med compliant live regular lives and can do anything!. Those who don't tend to be messy and create havoc for those around them!. That's you real concern!. Not whether he delayed telling you!.
PS - What he told you probably is true!. Still, find out about the meds!. More awareness does not control mania!. If he has two failed relationships because of BP, he may be off meds but go long periods between episodes!. Meds are a choice he has to make for himself!. You can make it a condition of the relationship, but it still has to be something he commits to for himself!. Hopefully, he is on meds and this is a non-issue!Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, as long as he has the situation under controll there is no reason to tell everyone!. I think he was scared you would run off on him if he said something!. I waited a year to tell my current gf!. I was worried she would freak out on me!.

Well as long as he wasnt having 'episodes' (not sure what you call them) and he wasn't harming you physically or emotionally then i think it's all good!. he might have thought he would have scared you off if he told you sooner!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am bi polar and I am going to college to be a social worker and when I had to do a med check up fo my internship, I felt embarrased that I had to tell them that I was bipolar and on meds!. People are always too quick to judge!. That is why many people will hide it!. Bi polar is serious if untreated, trust I know, as long as he agrees to be treated for it and he is good to you then you shouldn't leave him, if anything it will strengthen your relationship!. If you are really concrened research it on the web to comfort your possible fears about it!. Also Bi-polar is the new depression!. so nothing to worry aboutWww@Answer-Health@Com
