I've been a substance abuse counselor and there's a question that needs to be asked before everyone badmouths the doctor: Did you "forget" to tell him you're a heroin addict!? (That's present tense, by the way - there's no such animal as a FORMER addict)!.

Also, why are you asking what it "feels like" to be on valium!?

I have a feeling you're playing a very dangerous game!. One of the most important parts of recovery is ownership of your addiction and that starts with telling all docs about the addiction and then, even more importantly, never taking a drug you know you can't have!.

If you're a heroin addict, you cannot have valium!. It really is that simple!. If your stress is legitimate, there are non-addictive drugs like buspar that you can take!.

Oh!.!.!.and on the offchance that you were completely honest with the doc, and he really did say you'd "be fine"!.!.!.!.he needs to be reported to your state licensing bureau and you need another doc asap!. But I doubt this is what happened!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think you are smart and your doctor is a fool!. Go work with a psychiatrist who will at least look at antidespressants instead!. Those will not give you a high or tempt you back into addiction!. Beta blockers are another alternatives as the first poster said!.

Meanwhile, try doing some real aerobic exercise in the morning, walking some at lunch if you can, and try to watch the sunset or sunrise a couple times a week!. The last sounds silly, but it is calming and puts things into perspective!. Take up yoga, meditate, do the natural alternatives!. Start therapy if you can!. Part of stress is due to not prioritizing your needs for peace and peace of mind over other demands of living!. The problem then becomes that you are too stressed to fulfill those other demands adequately!.

PS - low dose of valium feels like a relaxing buzz!. Higher doses feels like a mellow spacey high!. It would be reminicent of heroin!. It is not at all a good choice for a former addict!. Heck, it's even one of the more powerful benzos!. Your doc is an assss!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The medication you is addictive, never take more than prescribed, you can ask the doctor to ween your off them as you get better, never share your medicine, taking more than prescribed won't make things better, it will only cloud your problem, you need to get help from a group, or one on one with a person, with a professional to find out what the real reason you are taking the medication for, best of health to you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Without knowing whether you have revealed your history to the doctor it will be hard to say that the doctor is a fool, as suggested by someone here!. Your question indicates that you want to know how it feels to be on valium!. Rethink again about taking this med!. It can be addictive especially if you have history of substance abuse!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you are a former addict this doctor is an idiot! valium is very addicting espically for a former addict!. it gives you a laid back feeling and yea a sort of high is what you get so for god s sake dont take it!. call your doc and tell him you want something that is not addicting!. they have many other anti-anxiety pill s to give you i don't understand why he did this! all it takes is one mistake and you could be back out there using and you know that!. throw them away flush them now before you are tempted to try one!. I am a former addict and I know how hard it is to keep clean/ been 9 yrs now!. so don't let some fool doctor get you hooked on these pills!. either go to another doc!. or call this one back up and tell him about your situation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes it can become addictive, why Valium!? other medication can be used for anxiety/stress that is not addictive!. sorry to say this but if you used to be addicted to heroin I cannot quite believe you have never tried Valium/diazepam both same thing!.I think you know what it feels like to use this don't go there ifyou are of drugs good for you ,ask your GP to look at alternative Buspar is good !. good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

he might have sad you would be fine, but i sure wouldnt take it, it is a drug that is known for its addictive properties!.!.!.!.can you try exersize and relaxation techniques!? i know it they wont work as well, but with the med you are just exchanging one problem for another and NOTHING will make stress go away!.!.!.its part of life!.!. we just gotta learn to deal with it and find ways to cope!.!.even if it is extreme stress!. iused to take anti depressants and anti anxiety meds!. not on them now and less stressed than when i was taking them!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You'll probably be fine!. Valium isn't anything near heroin!.

It'll make you feel alittle relaxed and very tired!.

More people have died from withdrawal of Valium than overdose!.

But if you can't trust yourself!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would be reluctant to give a former addict Valiums!. They to can be very addictive!. I would get a second opinion or reiterate to your Dr!. that you were a serious heroin addict!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You got the victory over heroin!.What a battle that must have been!.So why go into another battle!?
By-the-way,what is this doctor on!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't agree with your doc either, unless your stress/anxiety is pretty much a psychiatric emergency!.

Here are my tips for stress and anxiety!. This is one of my standard blurbs I wrote up for questions like yours:

**************

Try turning the heat up in the house or dressing much more warmly!. It is hard to feel anxiety when you are too warm!. I was able to cut out ativan use altogether by using this trick!. Saved me big $$ too, because pills cost way more than heat!. Hot baths work too, and in a pinch, like at work/school, you can try running hot water over your hands!.

Avoid caffeine like the plague!. Also, some cold remedies can cause anxiety!. Look for the "agitation in children" warning on the box!. Adults can get problems too!.

Try meditation tapes like progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery!. They may seem silly at first, but they work!! They help reduce stress, which makes depression worse!. You can get The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook, a really good book, maybe the library has it!. There are some guided imageries in there, you could read them aloud and make a tape/cd, or get a friend to do it if you can't stand your own voice!. I read mine into the computer using a program called Audacity (free) and digitally altered my voice so it doesn't bug me!.

Go out with friends, and if you don't have any, find a club to join and MAKE yourself go until you actually look forward to it!. A little laughing helps reduce anxiety!.

Exercise at least 1/2 hour a day, and anytime you feel really hyper or depressed!. Exercise is a great mood stabilizer and cuts down on anxiety a lot!. Don't do it a couple hours before bed, though, or you will be too hyped up!.

If your anxiety makes it hard for you to sleep, here are some good "sleep hygiene" tips so you can sleep better!. Like go to bed and get up about the same time each day, even weekends!. Don't use your bedroom to watch TV and read and use the computer and all that-just use the room as a bedroom normally would be used!. Don't do stuff that pumps you up right before bed, like exercising and using the computer!. You want to use that last hour to wind down-Take a bath !? Make the bedroom really dark, cover up the clock radio, even so the light doesn't shine at you!. If you live in the rackety city, use a noise generator (makes wave sounds and the like) to cover up the city sounds!. Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening!.

Put a lot of colorful things around the house, happy type things, and keep the blinds open and let the sun in!. Make a list of things that make you happy!. Here's some things on my list: A basket full of fluffy kittens, bread fresh from the oven, Fireworks popping on a warm summer evening, The first fireflies of the season, the scent of Jergen's cherry almond lotion, The crisp sound of a saltine cracker breaking, fresh sheets on the bed, flicking a plug out onto the still surface of a summer lake, with a big sploosh! waiting for a bass to hit it, etc!. Use all your senses and read that list when you are breaking down!. It's kind of like comfort food, but without the calories!! I also break things up by using familiar scents, like the aforementioned jergens lotion, or vanilla or cloves!. Scent can be very comforting!.

Work on time management if being overwhelmed and late for things and too much to do is getting to you!. Cut back on other responsibilities temporarily so you can spend more restorative time with friends and family!. If there are people who stress you out, or situations, identify them and reduce them as much as possible!.

You got a significant other!? Extra physical touch is very helpful!. Most people in the US or UK are touch deprived, so hold hands more, hug more, give shoulder rubs, etc!. (Engage in a big ETC!. if you are an adult in a committed relationship; you know what I mean)!. A pet is good to cuddle with if your home situation allows you to get one!. (I'm an animal lover, don't get one if you can't commit to it for 15 years)

I've taken stress management classes in the mental hospital and thru my county's outpatient support center because I have bipolar disorder, and these suggestions are mostly in there!. Print this out as a good summary of several anxiety management tips!.

All the best!!Www@Answer-Health@Com
