What can a doctor (GP/Psych, etc) do for alcoholism?!

Question: What can a doctor (GP/Psych, etc) do for alcoholism!?
I know about antabuse, but I have a feeling that it would make me very, very sick!. I think I have the willpower to quit for a week on my own, right about now, perhaps even today, but is there any sort of medical solutions that will start to take effect in that first week!?
Co-morbid disorders include depression and anxiety!. I know as an alcoholic I'm probably co-indicated for typical anxiety meds!. I also know that medicines aren't effective until they get up to blood plasma, and I've also heard psychiatrists say they won't start treating co-morbid disorders until someone is two weeks clean from their addiction!.
Is there anything they can do right away!?
Right now I have school, job, and work stress, I know it's only going to get worse if I keep drinking, and it may come to the point where I experience a psychotic break, if last year is any indication!. (No diagnosis on that one; undifferentiated psychotic episode!.) I tried risperidone, but due to drinking could not take it regularly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
It sounds like you qualify to be officially diagnosed!. Doctors are funny about that they don't want to diagnose you because those may just be symptoms of being drunk!. Also they don't want you to take the medication together with alcohol!. It won't work, and it could be dangerous!. If you do have anxiety and depression it's not because of or"as an alcoholic!." I've been involved with this sort of thing for many years and not familiar with the term co-morbid!. If you have a mental disorder and an alcohol problem; here they call it a dual-diagnosis!. A psychotic episode can come from depression, or the opposite(manic)!. risperidone is for scitzophrenia- could work an episode I guess!. It's hard to go thru alcohol withdrawal while your mental problems are getting worse because of no medication!. Ask the doctor what he usually does in a catch 22 case like that, or ask the detox center what they have done!.
Medical doctors sometimes give people valium or librium to help with stopping alcohol( withdrawals), if someone wants to do it on their own!. You may have become an alcoholic from self medicatiing your anxiety/deppression!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Benzodiazepines such as lorazepam and diazepam (valium) can be very useful in treating such conditions without perpetuating the addiction!. Be sure to be honest with your doctor to receive the best possible care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
