Low self-esteem is generally a type of depression, where a depressed mood keeps you from feeling good about things people that would normally feel good about!. You can divide the causes of a depressed mood into two categories: biochemical and behavioral!. These categories overlap a little since numerous chemical in the brain (neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine) affect affect your behavior by causing depressed moods and thoughts; and your behavior (such as doing something fun or rewarding, or focusing your thoughts on something negative) affects the release of neurotransmitters that affect mood!. It's often very difficult to determine if the self-esteem issue is chemically-based or behavioral since it's a like the question about whether the chicken or egg cam first!.

Since there are two possible causes, its usually best to attack both causes at once!. The chemical basis for low self-esteem is usually treated effectively with anti-depressants!. Some people have genetic traits that cause their bodies to overproduce or under produce certain chemicals, and end up with depression!. If you are one of these people, then antidepressants may be the best way to overcome the problems!. I seem to be this type of person - i struggled for years until i finally overcame my fears of discussing this problem with my doctor!.

Some people notice that their self-esteem and mood go hand-in-hand with their behavior!. For example, you might meet a boy that you like and he starts paying a lot of attention to you, and you start feeling good about yourself!. But then the boy stops paying attention to you and you might begin to to think you are not worthy of his attention - this is a normal response - its how you deal with this response that separates people with low self-esteem from the rest of the pack!. Your choice of how to behave becomes important at this point because you can control how you deal with something that hurts your feelings!. A person with low self-esteem may simply have a bad habit of blaming themselves for someone elses' behavior, and responding to problems by sitting around and doing nothing except thinking about how bad things are!. For example, if you were dumped by your boyfriend, you might start thinking of reasons why you caused the boy to lose interest in you and make up possible causes - like the boy lost interest because you think you said something stupid, or that you are not pretty enough!. These things may not even be true, but a person with low-self esteem might choose to believe these thoughts are true and blame themselves - this is called internalization!.

In contrast, a person without high self-esteem intentionally fights against negative thinking!. If they are hurt by someone, they are more likely to take a neutral view of the situation or a negative view of the other person by telling themselves that the boy that dumped them wasn't a good match to begin with, or that he wasn't really all that interesting, or that there are many other boys that do like you - this is thought process involves externalization and rationalization which are defense mechanisms!.

A person with low self-esteem tends to internalize problems and make bad things worse, while a person with high self-esteem tends to rationalize or externalize problems to make them seem unimportant!. Beside these two behavioral tenancies, there is one other behavioral mechanism that is very important, and probably where you have the most control!. This mechanism is actively pursuing rewarding activities when you start to feel down!.

Some people engage in exercise like jogging, playing sports, or going to a gym, and this is often extremely effective at combating low self-esteem!. Other activities may be equally effective such as calling one of your friends and just talking, or maybe getting one of your friends to join you for something that is fun to do - like going to a water park or movie!. Fun activities and exercises take you mind off the negative thoughts and these activities also raise the levels of neurotransmitters that elevate mood!.

My advice is to read about depression and how to manage it!. Try to modify your behavior, and if this doesn't work after a while, then talk to your doctor about depression!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
