In your honest opinion, does medication for depression ever work?!

Question: In your honest opinion, does medication for depression ever work!?
or should you try all other methods !?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Medication only hides the symptoms and it does not remove the cause and has many harmful side effects like making the patient suicidal!.Natural food is the best cure, and only, permanent cure for all of human diseases whether you believe it or not!.Everything unnatural is harmful for your health not to mention expensive!.

Unfortunately, the general society has been brainwashed by the pharmaceutical companies and the doctors who advertise drugs and conduct research with drugs and get payed by the pharmaceutical companies!.

Pharmaceutical companies do not want their customers to be permanently cured because if they were the pharmaceutical companies would fall!.They want their customers to keep taking drugs so they can keep making money to satisfy their greed!.A time will come when the majority of the people will learn that drugs cannot restore their mental and physical balance and will stop buying drugs and replace them with natural food and the majority of drug companies will perform a last a futile attempt to sell them the nutrients they receive from food,by aggressive advertising, in the form of supplements but they will fail because after the initial delusion that the human body can use these nutrients passes the truth will be discovered that it cannot not and they will fall!.

Many people will loose their jobs because they will not be able to survive because they do not know how to do anything else but many people will also find new work in selling health food!.There is no progress without sacrifice!.Educate yourself about nutrition while you still can and find work selling healthy natural food and you will be doing yourself and others a great favor and you will ensure your future!.

I know that this opinion will get a lot of thumbs down because most people believe that drugs indeed help them and cure their diseases and that they cannot live without them and will defend them whenever they have the chance but the truth is they would be far more happier and healthier if they removed them from their lives and improved their diets by consuming more natural omega 3,vitamin,mineral,protein etc!. sources and not supplements!.I believe that time will tell that the human body cannot use nutrients that have been stripped from their natural sources if it has not already!.

I started eating more natural food every day for 2 months and i have never felt better in my life and even cured 2 of my minor illnesses that i have known about!.

Believe what you will but time will tell if you are a fool or a wise man!.Most people believe only what the so called scientists tell them and do not want to think for themselves because they are naive!.Just because you feel good does not mean you are good!.Find the truth for yourselves!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi: In my experience and the experiences of many people I have met at a depression support group, I would say that medication does work!.

However, there are many issues to bear in mind!. If you are not seriously depressed and thinking of harming yourself or others, I would start with approaches that do not include medication!. These include psychotherapy, and it's important to find the right therapist (for you) and the right type of therapy for you!. Of course, group therapy and support groups also fall into this category!.

Personally, one of my most potent antidepressants is exercise!. I would also recommend some form of relaxation or meditation technique!. Paying attention to good nutrition and avoiding too much sugar also can be helpful!. Omega 3 fish oils is worth a try!.

Beyond that, there are so many alternative medicine approaches that can help, for example, herbs, acupuncture, massage therapy, etc!.

However, if you have tried the above approaches and they were not helpful, it is time to get yourself a good shrink and start popping pills!. Unfortunately, a med that works well for one person may not help someone else with very similar symptoms!. You might need to try different meds at different doses!. Sometimes people get the best results from combining meds!. Sometimes you have to fire your shrink and find someone more appropriate for you!. However, when you find the right meds, it is often like "Oh, my God, this is what it's like to feel 'normal'!." It's like a light turns on in your brain that wasn't working for years!.

Research shows that popping the right pills PLUS seeing a psychotherapist is much more effective than just doing therapy or taking medication!. To this I would add that throwing in other approaches is also recommended!. While you are popping pills, you can also exercise, see friends, keep a journal, whatever floats your boat!.

So, I hope this long list has not made you more confused or depressed than before!. I wish you the best!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

While it helps in the short term it can screw people over in the long run!. People on medication often become reliant on the medication to live their everyday lives!. The idea manifests in their head that 'should they come off the medication, the depression will return'!. As depression is something that comes from the brain, there is nothing physically wrong with the person affected!. Medication attempts to fix things physically, or cut off a normal function of the body if the person is unable to control it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It does work when someone is truly ill with depression!.
If someone has mild depression, its good to try other routes first, such as counselling, exercise and alternative therapies!. If that doen't work then medication is necessary!.
The doctor needs to prescribe a medication suitable for you and start you on a low dose!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

~YES, they do work! It may cause unpleasant side effects, but you keep trying different ones the doctor prescribes until he or she finds the one right for you!. Sometimes it does take time to work, and you should have counseling while taking the medication!.
Especially with teenagers, sometimes they mistake a side effect as a true feeling that will never go away and commit suicide, that is the most important reason to seek counseling with medication!.
You don't have to try them all, and I don't think you'll want to, just give it time!. Depression is a chemical imbalance and is not your fault!.
Good luck!.~Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try Naturopathy!. It's alternative medicine!.

It's hard to find a Naturopathic doctor I know, but it's so worth it!. My mom has been practicing this for about 7 years now!. Not that I'm saying this because my mommy is always right but I've just been lucky enough to be exposed to this!.

It's the same as any other practitioner would do but much more natural and much, much easier on your mind and body!.
It can include work in herbal tinctures, homeopathy, acupuncture, pain management, hydroptherapy, weight loss, chiropractic work, and yes counselling!.
Naturopathy is not all hippie work!. They can perform lab testing, give vitamin shots, or whatever really!.

I'm not the best at explaining this, I'm only 16 and just telling what I know from growing up with my mom!. I was the receptionist for her for about a year, and she's treated many patients with severe depression with successful results and the clients are still seeing her to maintain any emotional or physical health!.

Really, look into it!. It's great! :)
Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

in my opinion all they do is make me soo tired that i really can't be bothered being depressed!. So yeah if the goal is to stop all the sad and depressed emotions, it does work, but that being said you are still faced with being incredibly exhausted by tablets and just all round apathetic!.

I had depression when i was younger (15-17) and i tried pills for a week and they totally screwed with me!. I don't think it's good to rely on pills for your problem!.

I think exercise is the best cure (or stability)

its up to you but you wanted an opinion and mine is it's not worth it!. Do you really want to rely on pills when you could (if you try hard enough) get out of the sunken hole of depression yourself!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think it all depends on what is making a person depressed!. If it is a chemical imbalance then I say yes they do work!. Although you may have to try several different kinds of medications to figure out which one is the best for you, and keep in mind that it usually takes several weeks for you to see a difference!. However if your just depressed because your over worked whether at school, or at a job!. Or your family life is in turmoil then I believe that there are other alternatives like getting out and doing things that you love to do!. I personally go kayaking, or camping, and if that doesn't work then I'd suggest seeing a counselor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Once a person finds the right med for them, they usually work very well!. Sometimes one needs to try more than one med!. I take lexapro every morning and I'm always happy now, and that med doesn't have any side effects on me!.

I went through a lot of counseling too and that helped a lot!. I was debating going through a divorce!. The counselor helped me sort things out and the meds calmed me down!. I was finally able to think with my head and not my depressive personality!. It's been a year now and life is still good!.

So yes, meds usually help, but other methods help too!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, they are statistically more effective than placebo, and the worse the depression, the bigger their advantage over placebo!.

This doesnt mean that they will work for every person!.

But yes, there is irrefutable evidence that on the whole they work better than placebo!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The medication does work!. However, the trap that most people fall into is this: it takes almost 4-6 weeks for antidepressants to reach therapeutic levels in the blood and to become effective unable to wait for results, they stop the medication!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes, medication can be a huge help in dealing with depression, especially when there is a chemical imbalance involved!. Counseling is also very important and shouldn't be overlooked!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'd say avoid the meds! Do exercises early in the morning and avoid caffine!. Also try keeping urself busy by activities you like to do and keep your mind off depression!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Medication for depression works but it doesnt do 100 % of the work!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.There should be other things the depressed person should as have fun and go outside etc so as to overcome depression!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, it has worked wonders for me!. When there is a chemical imbalance in your brain, doing things naturally just will not work!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Medicatation is a complimentary treatment but cannot replace your own will to recover and move on to better things!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's always a good thing to try something natural!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The medicines work!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes it works!.

I also think therapy helps too!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it does work for me!.!.!.when I don't take my meds I can definitely tell a differenceWww@Answer-Health@Com

Depression drugs 'do not work'

Adam Cresswell, Health editor | February 27, 2008

NEW-GENERATION antidepressants, including the "happy pill" Prozac, may be no better at relieving the symptoms of depression than a dummy pill!.

Controversial new research builds on earlier claims that the drugs work only for the most severely depressed patients, and there is no reason to prescribe them unless other treatments have failed!.

The research, by Anglo-US experts, also claims that even part of the benefit seen in very depressed patients stems from their having a reduced response to the placebo - the term for the dummy pills against which trial drugs are usually compared - rather than an increased response to the antidepressant when compared with patients with less severe depression!.

If correct, the findings - based on an analysis of 35 studies lodged with the US Food and Drug Administration by the drug makers - imply a massive overuse of the drugs worldwide!.

The drugs in the analysis, which include the brands Effexor (venlafaxine), Aropax and Prozac, have achieved blockbuster sales since being introduced in the 1990s!. There were nearly four million prescriptions written in Australia for the three drugs combined in 2006-07, costing the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme $130million!. Venlafaxine, the most commonly prescribed of the three, was the eighth-biggest drain on the PBS in that year!.

A fourth drug included in the research, nefazodone (Serzone), was withdrawn in Australia in 2004 after being linked to liver and eye problems!.

The analysis - published in the US journal Public Library of Science Medicine - has been criticised by Australian experts, who say its findings are badly flawed!.

Gordon Parker, director of the Black Dog Institute and professor of psychiatry at the University of NSW, recently argued in the British Medical Journal that depression was over-diagnosed!.

But he said patients should not shy away from antidepressants as a result of this study, as the patients on whom the results were based "bear very little correlation to the people we see in real-life clinical practice"!.

In particular, participants in trials of antidepressants were usually hospital outpatients rather than admitted patients, they were not suicidal, and did not have drug or alcohol problems - criteria that limited the wider applicability of the results, Professor Parker said!.

Patients with melancholic depression were often "in a very dark place" and rarely got onto clinical trials!. But 65 to 70 per cent of these patients responded to antidepressants, whereas only 10 to 15 per cent improved after taking the placebo, he said!.

"I'm particularly concerned about people who are benefiting from antidepressants, or would benefit, feeling that an effective treatment is useless or discredited (as a result of this research)," Professor Parker said!.

Ian Hickie, director of the Brain and Mind Research Institute at Sydney University - who argued against Professor Parker in the same edition of the British Medical Journal - said the findings ignored the fact that suicide rates had fallen in countries where antidepressant use was most widespread!. "It would be a mistake to say that drug treatment should be withheld for anything other than the most severe depression," he said!.

"Even quite low levels of depression significantly increase suicide risk!."

The study, led by Irving Kirsch, now at the Department of Psychology at the University of Hull, builds on earlier analyses of the same data he published in a different journal in 2002!.

A spokesman for GlaxoSmithKline, which makes Aropax, said Professor Kirsch's team had "failed to acknowledge the very positive benefits these treatments have provided to patients"!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
