What does a low EQ [emotional quotient] mean?!

Question: What does a low EQ [emotional quotient] mean!?
I've taken a lot of EQ tests!. My scores always turn out low, and not just low for the average, but off-the-chart low!. My last score was a 12, and they noted that people who had scores less than 20 were autistic!. The other test I took showed the information on a scale, and I was almost totally off the scale!. All of the questions I answered were correct, and I scored them right!. I am really dreading that someone is going to tell me I'm autistic!. I don't feel like I'm like that at all, but I feel like I have emotional/social problems, and I have trouble expressing my emotions and understanding social situations!. And I don't want to have a mental disability, or whatever autism even is!. Is there anything I can do to increase my EQ score!? If I am autistic, I'm already taking counceling, do you think they could give me therapy or something!? It's really, really bugging me!. I'm 15, female!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Your score may differ quite alot with different tests!.

If you don't think you have a problem and your ability in social situations isnt holding you back then you shouldn't be worried, but as you described it may be concerning you!. People with this problem may also have aspergers syndrome!.

The low score and difficulty in social situations may also be due to your age as you are right in the middle of the age range where your brain develops and can cause confusion in this area!.

Talk to your doctor if you are worried about it and try not to look at it in a negative way as people can deal with these "disabilities" and live a completely normal life!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I really do not believe that a low EQ score has anything to do with being autistic!.!.!. but i do think it has more to do with immaturity and irrational thinking!.

10 years ago, i took an emotional intelligence test, and got a relatively low score!. today, it's much higher!.

When we are more rational in our thinking, take our time and work things out in a calm and thoughtful manner, we are more likely to have better social skills and relationships!.

I think this is a complicated subject, so i'm going to leave my answer at that!.

Lots of experts feel that it doesn't mean anything!. EQ is even more controversial than IQ!. The problem with personality assessments is that they don't actually measure the way you'd react to a given situation -- they measure the way that you *say* you'd act!. Most people don't answer them honestly without realizing -- they look at the list of responses, judge which one they think they'd *like* to respond with, and don't make an immense effort to put themselves into the actual situation and think about what their response would be!. As a result, those who answer the tests extremely honestly and with a great deal of introspection will look less mature in comparison!.

My former boss told this story: working with a bunch of economic types, they'd discuss matters in terms of economic impact!. He noted that his assistants, who were hired to support him, would actually be better off if he were in jail or dead -- because then they would be the natural choices to be promoted to his position, with its higher salary and so forth!. Of course he was a great guy and we all loved him, so it wasn't exactly as though we were sitting around wishing him dead!. In any case, he was goofing off at home one day and took an online psychiatry test!. One of the questions was, "Do you ever think that people would be better off if you were dead!?" So he thought, "Of course! We were just talking about that yesterday," and checked the "yes" box!. The result of this was to halt the test, turn the screen bright pink, and tell him to seek immediate psychiatric help to keep him from committing suicide!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
