How did I end up being bipolar from a break up?!

Question: How did I end up being bipolar from a break up!?
In 2002 I broke up with my high school sweetheart on our prom night!. I fell into a horrible depression!.

Come 6 years later and 3 doctors diagnose me with bipolar disorder type 1!?

WTF, how can i go from depression, which is not hereditary, and it was caused by a girl, into some life long hereditary bipolar disease!?

So basically what is being said is that had I never had that depression, i would have STILL ended up being bipolar!?

Before anybody asks, yes i got all the symptoms of bipolar disorder!. My first manic episode happened in 2004!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Many mental illnesses (depression, bipolar, schizophrenia) may surface as a result of a stressful event!. Most people can trace it back to when it all began!. I can!. I am bipolar NOS, and my first depressive episode was a result of my parents splitting up, at the age of 12!.

Would it have happened eventually!? Quite likely!. Everyone has stress in their lives at some point, and if you are prone to mental illness, any stressful thing can bring the illness to the surface!.

By the way, depression CAN be hereditary!. But any mental illness can also appear spontaneously, with no family history!.

If everyone in your family gets cancer, you are more likely to develop cancer!. But even if no one does, there is still a chance you could develop it!. Mental illness works the same way!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I asked this question when me and my husband went through a horrible separation due to his cheating and drug use!. During the separation he was told that he was bipolar and I asked him how could this be he never showed signs of this before the breakup!. His answer was that the doctor told him that you can have it and not show it but a major life event can cause the bipolar to go into effect!. My husband is fine now with counseling for depression and drugs but he has hard days!. His doctor seems to think that drugs especially cocaine can sometimes cause a chemical in-balance to set this off as well but did say he has no way of backing it up but to say he sees this alot in his patients!. I hope this offers a little help!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have been bipolar for over 25 years!. I have never heard of a type!. As I understand mental illness is hereditary!. My father, brother, an aunt, and 2 nieces have the disorder, however my four grown daughters have no indication of being bipolar!. My youngest, however has been showing signs of anxiety!. There is no mental illness on my husband's side of the family!.

Recently, I was told that the disorder was caused by trauma!. I had trauma beginning at the age of 4!. But, I'm not too sure of that idea!.

Another thing about mental illness, it has such a terrible social stigma now were hiding in the closet!. You take care, and don't worry too much! Sounds like doing fine!

You probably have bi-polar disease in your family history and not necessarily in your immediate family either!. Things like that can often skip generations!. Sorry to hear that, hope things get better for you!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Like many mentioned, bipolar is sometimes "dormant" and is "triggered on" after a bad/traumatic event!. You should also know that bipolar shoes up most of the time at puberty (teenage years to early/late twenties!.!.!.)

The illness itself is basically your neurons (specific cells in your brain) that control moods, start slowing down (that where depression starts) and sometimes the neurons are going extra fast (that's when the mania phase comes)!.!.!.It can also be your receptives (the connection in your brain) that start being unresponsive or over stimulated!.It is a phisical problem in the brain!.!.!.an imbalance!. That's where the medication comes in, to balance it out!.!.!.

Yes, most of the time it's heredetery!.!.!.It doesn't have to be your close relatives(like your parents), it can be any family member!.!.!.and some family members may have it and either not know or wont mentionne it to anyone!. I know when I told my family, one of my uncle admitted to having it (and we never knew before- although I had doubts he was from the way he was acting!.!.!.) And like other heredetery illnesses, people may carry the gene and never develope the illnesses!.

There is still alot to be learn on that subject!.!.!.And sadly enough, many people still wont admit that it is a REAL illeness and will judge you alot!. You will have to face alot of predjudice and labeling!.!.!.(heck, even some doctors won't recognise Bipolar as a real illness!.!.!.) But don't put guilt on yourself!!!!. You are not deciding or controlling the moods swings (like so many think!.!.!.)

I wish the medical board would change the classification of bipolar being a "mentall" illness, cause it's really a "phisical" illeness in the brain!.!.!. and it would stop alot of stigmas!.!.!.

People suffering from bipolar are not stupid or dangerous!!! It's the people that judge us that are!!;)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Boy, do you ever sound like me!. I got used time and time again by a guy who I thought cared, and it just stopped going on, it started when I was 14 or 15 and I am now nearly 21!. I got diagnosed with schizophrenia, undifferentiated sub-type, with some bipolar issues!. But my signs start as early as 5 and was most likely because A-I was 20 and half weeks early, B-My mom had uterus infection when she was carrying me and C-My family has a VERY long line of having serious mental illness!. And some guy, didn't give me my disorder (Like some girl didn't give yours) its a chemical brain problem It does skip, sometime it can skip like 3 generations or more, and then POOF someone is mentally ill!.

Bottom line is, not matter what happened you would have still ended up with bipolar!. Stress is the main trigger of psychosis!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
