If I go to my doctor for depression, will he send me to a shrink?!

Question: If I go to my doctor for depression, will he send me to a shrink!?
Here's what I'm wondering: If I admit to my doctor that I've considered suicide, is he authorized (or obliged) to send my contact info to a psychiatrist!? or send me for an evaluation or anything!? (does it matter that I live in NH!?)

Just wondering!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm a bit hesitant to answer this, as I'm afraid that my answer will scare you off!.!.!.!.but here it goes!.!.!.Your Dr!. very much legally obligated to get you help if you are a danger to yourself, or someone else!. YOu are suicidal!.!.well yea that's not good!. If you tell him that then yes he will be obligated to do something!.!.!.FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!!!

I'm only saying this so you don't decide to not seek treatment at all but if you go to your Dr!. and tell him your depressed!.!.!.he may be able to prescribe you with meds!.!.!.and hopefully the suicidal thoughts will go away!.!.!.however that is risky!.!.!.you are better off telling the truth!.

Its a fact that people who are suicidal truely suicidal have the highest risk of following through with it at the begining of medication treatment!.!.!.as they were too depressed and didn't have enough energy to do it before medication!.!.!.but as the medication starts to work there energy goes up!. So they are able to follow through!.!.!.so honestly your best bet is to tell him the truth and get whatever help you need!.!.!.it may suck in the begining stages!.!.but before you knwo it!.!.you will be so glad you did!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I went to the doctor with problems I was having and I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety!. Firstly I should point out I live in the UK so if your not from the UK I'm not sure how different your health system!.

Anyway, they prescribed me a drug call 'peroxitine' which initially helped me get out of the catch 22 situation (that the things you need to do to help your self you can't do because of your illness) though after almost six months I realised the medication it self was stopping me progress any further so came off them!. So if you take the medication option, be careful not to to depend on them and just use them for initial help!. A lot of people end up on anti-depressants for the rest of there life because they become to dependent on them and it becomes harder and harder to come off them!.

In answer to your question!. I was automatically referred to the councilor at the practice who I had to see weekly!. I actually hated this, i wanted answers and all she did was ask questions!. however thinking back now it helped because it made me realise things myself that I wouldn't of otherwise and I was able to put those things at rest!.

The only realistic way to combat depression is through 'Cognitive Behavioral Therapy' , which basically means to re-train the way you think!. This is something that only YOU can do, although it can be made much easier with support and knowledge, so learn about the mental disorder and get advice and talk to people that understand!.

If you have considered suicide then seek support immediately, its nothing to be ashamed of and talking to someone WILL help, so don't worry, feel that your alone or be embarrassed!. go go goWww@Answer-Health@Com

Even if your doctor does give you medication, only getting counselling help will really do the job!. Once you are off the medication later on, the thoughts that have caused you to consider suicide will only return again!. (I know this because I have been through it)!.

What has been happening in your life that has been causing you so much pain to make you want to take your own life, it is your souls attempt to end the anguish you are feeling!.

Maybe you need a good debriefing on your childhood, life defining moments that have made you think about yourself in certain ways, and help discerning what are true thoughts and what are lies you are believing!.

Remember, they are a branch of medicine, you wouldn't give yourself open heart surgery so why perform almost the same thing on your mind yourself!?!? There is no shame in needing help!

All the best, and I hope you are happier about seeing a pscychotherapist!.

They will most likely suggest it!.
But If you don't feel as though you need to then they will understand!.
A Doctor can't make you do anything unless you are labled 'insane' i suppose!.

Sorry to hear you are feeling this way (if you are)!.
