Yes!. It has been pointed out that schizophrenics in our society could be shamans in other societies, that paranoid people in our society often become police (because they believe danger lurks around every corner), that people who suffer from OCD are often excellent office managers, and so on!. It's also been said that mental illness is the way people use to protect themselves from the world!. So, schizophrenics, for instance, withdraw from the real world because they believe that the real world is terrifying and they know of no other way to survive!.
