Answers:
You can do some limited substance abuse counseling with only a bachelor's degree!. But it's usually focused on education and making sure the person sticks with the treatment plan!. With a master's degree, you can do more, and address other issues, and be a part of a treatment team!. Getting a doctorate, you can do all the above, plus be the primary counselor/therapist for the individual!.

A bachelor's takes 4-5 years, plus a year or so getting certified!. A master's degree (in psychology or social work or counseling) takes an additional 2 years, plus a year or more under a provisional license being supervised!. A doctorate takes usually 3-5 years after a bachelors, plus supervision and postdoc work!.

The job can be rewarding, but is difficult!. Many individuals who abuse substances relapse, and it can be trying on a counselor to work so hard, to have them blow it!. But you are taught how to deal with relapses!. The job outlook is good, but many health organizations are attempting to lessen cost, and thus rely on counselors and staff with training less than a doctorate!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
