I think part of the reason that parents are worked up about their child getting autism is because the disorder has become so prevalent!. It is a natural reaction for parents to worry when they hear the term "autism" related to their child--mostly because:
a!.) they're not fully knowledgable on the disorder as they would like to be (as you've mentioned, ignorance)

b!.) they're well aware of the disorder and are fearful that their child might be on the more severe end of the spectrum!.

I'm glad to hear that your son is doing great even though he is on the spectrum!. He is very lucky!. There are so many children who aren't as lucky and are on the more severe end of the spectrum--so severe that their only way of responding to the world is by hitting or screaming or worse!. I used to work at a center for teens and adults with autism, and you can't imagine the things I've seen (good and bad)!. So you see, it's not that all people are ignorant to autism!. Perhaps it's the opposite!.!.!.that we're almost too aware !.!.!.mostly of it's negative symptoms that we fail to realize that with advanced education and resources available, these children can have a positive future--no matter where they are on the spectrum!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sorry, but anything that is different freaks people out!. You have to admit that finding out your kid is even slightly autistic can be quite traumatic for parents!. The same goes for any other disability or disease!. I had a friend who found out their daughter had diabetes and it was very traumatic for them!.

Like anything, it takes a little time to accept the diagnosis and to cope with it!. I don't think that you can judge them based on their initial reaction!.

well, of course parents are concerned if they think their child might have autism!. it IS big deal, because it IS a disablilty!. in some cases, it may be worse than down's syndrome, depending on where they are on the spectrum!. i don't think a lot of people are "ignorant" to it; it's just something that's being diagnosed a lot these days, and because ther are no phscials giveaways (like in down's syndrome) parents might overreact sometimes!.

i think you're wrong about people being ignorant to autism!. on the contrary, if people are asking a lot of questions, it means that they want to know more!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Because some people don't understand it fully!. There is not enough education out there like cancer and stuff for people to understand what it is!. And most of the time, there are other things that could be wrong with a child, and they assume that is the case!. All children are different that have it, a lot of them are normal people that have it under control, but they just live there lives a little different!. With a normal everyday route they have created for themselves to get through life!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's probably because it seems "new" because it's only recently gotten a lot of attention in books, movies, TV shows, organizations, etc!.

But some forms of it can be really hard to deal with, requiring a lot of special care (therapy, play groups, schools, doctors, etc!.)

It's good that your son is doing well, and it's good to let people know that, but I think it'll be a while before people have a clear idea about what autism really encompasses and what it can mean in context!.

Most are ignorant because they don't know what to believe!. The waters are muddied by too many quacks trying to make a buck off of it that use untruths to sell their "cure" or promote their own hypothesis, however disproven!. There's simply too much money to make off the confusion!. Between all the newest conspiracy theories, the general public get burnt out!. Apathy sets in!.

This happens on the forefront by disingenuinous organizations while we are left to pick up the pieces and try to promote a more understanding society towards the disabled!. Believe me, I know what you mean!. Willful ignorance is a terrible thing!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't think most people are ignorant to Autism i just think they have no idea what it is or what it means and if i am honest before my son Thomas was diagnosed i had no idea what autism was at all, but i had to learn fast, people with autism do not look different but they do act a little different i know my son does sometimes and i think this is why people react to him the way they do, he often screams holds his ears and as always carried his baby toy around with him he is 10 now and people just often think he is babyish or slow, just because people cannot see that there is something wrong i don't blame them for this because autism is known as the invisible disability, which is true to me, people don't really have to know anything about autism unless they have too, say if a member of their family was diagnosed with it!.!. as i say i do not have to explain Thomas behaviour to anyone he is who he is now !.!.If people do not like it don't look at him Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes I know but I suppose it is a big deal for those parents with Way to high expectations for their kids like they want them to become amazing actors or amazing football players!. They're already making a mistake when they have those kind of expectations but anyway!.!.!.

But I definitely agree things could be a lot worse!. If my child had cancer it would break my heart but autism just means they would be a little different!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

People are ignorant because

a) there's still not a whole lot known about autism and what causes it (compared to other medical stuff that is)

b) there isn't much education happening to teach people what we do know

and

c) people are pretty ignorant and scared generally when it comes to mental disorders/illnesses

sucks eh!Www@Answer-Health@Com

well Autism it is a very hard condition because it is very hard to reach those child's they don't communicate with no one!. they are also afraid of everything that surrounds them and any change in their environment makes them angry, and also it is hard to know what they want they can not socialize with others and lot more!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

people are ignorant about these type of illnesses, cause they are afraid to learn about the unknown, they might even be afraid to read on it,cause it might be that someone in their family might be suffering from it,but are too afraid or ashamed of facing or addressing it,which is sad, cause we are all people regardless of what limitations we might have,we each have hidden talents, even those who can not speak out verbally, they have inner talents that people do not want to see,as they are blind and too into themselves to look deep within a person who has this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The reason is probably because many parents haven't experienced anything bad that can happen 2 children!. i know a little girl that has autism and when we were on the playground, she started licking all the playground equipment!. im glad ure son is okayWww@Answer-Health@Com

because most people have never dealt with mental disorders!.

Most peoples concern would be their child's ability to lead a normal life!. Most autistic people are not capable of leading a "normal" life and can become a burden on siblings when the parents are gone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Few children with autism live independently after reaching adulthood, but some become successful, and an autistic culture has developed, with some seeking a cure and others believing that autism is a condition rather than a disorder!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

after watching WWE's Saturday's Night Main event and i researched Autism!. I thought it was a nice word for retard but after research i realized it's not as bad as what someone might thinkWww@Answer-Health@Com

because some people are ignorant little bastards!. and anyone who makes fun of a handicapped person deserves to have their eyeballs ripped out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Parents worry about everything to do with their kids!. It's healthy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

"Normal" people in general freak out over anything that is out of their comfort zone!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

because the people with Autism are different from the other people so then they feel wierd around themWww@Answer-Health@Com

IM SORRY! Www@Answer-Health@Com
