Question: Help me please i dont know what to do!?
I have been very depressed lately not wanting too see anybody after what happened to me last week and i havent left my house in 5 days!. Im a volunteer EMT!.
Last week on wensday on a call a patient asked me if she was going too die and she made me promise that she wouldnt!. I promised her!. About 10min!. before we got to the hostipital she died!. On friday i put in a termination of voulnteer service!. I cant do it any more!. It was my fault she died I should have done other things!.

You did nothing wrong and were just trying your best to help her!. There are many things we just cant control in life, and you shouldnt blame yourself!. Talking about this to friends, family, or a professional may help you ease some of this hurt you've been feeling!. Most important though, remember what happened wasn't your fault!. As a volunteer, you may not have many resources right at hand to cope with the trauma you have experienced!. There is help available, you will need to look for it!.
It is not your fault that she died, you are responsible for giving her hope in a hopeless situation, and that is a gift, no matter how long she lived after that!.
If you have a religious preference, please contact a clergy person to assist you!.

It's hard to keep a promise that you can't control!. (You were nice for trying to comfort her)!. It is hard to see someone go especially when you look into their eyes offering a promise!. It is ok to morn!. You did a very nice thing!. Don't beat yourself, remember only God decides to keep or take someone!. Tomorrow is a New Day!. Everyday is a New Day!. You are like a solder ready for a battle!. Cheer up :) And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them!. Medical workers of any type have to learn how to have a professional emotional distance from their patients!. It was good you encourage the dying woman, she needed hope and no one knew if she'd make it or not!. I think you may be too tender hearted for this kind of work, so you may want to find another field such as nonprofit or social service work where peoples physical lives are not on the line!. First!.!.remember you did not kill her!.None of us knows when we or someone else is going to die!.That is entirely in God's hands!. You were doing your job!. You were showing empathy by telling her what she needed to hear at that time!. I don't know if i could be an emt myself!. I couldn't handle the stress but I applaud the many people who do!. They save lives!!!! Forgive yourself and try to move on!.Talk to someone else in the business maybe they have shared something similiar and can encourage you!.
