How can I get the most out of counseling? Does "talk" therapy work?!

Question: How can I get the most out of counseling!? Does "talk" therapy work!?
I am seeing a psychologist and have been for three weeks now!. I specifically told my insurance I would only see a psychologist with a PhD because I was tired of seeing unprofessional licensed mental health counselors (I have seen one really mediocre one that helped about as much as watching a Dr!. Phil episode at best and exasperated my issues with my mom at worse)!.

Now I am seeing this one and he is really good!. Very professional, smart!. Has a great office!. I felt comfortable just jumping right in to my issues since I am a pro at this therapy stuff now!. I like his non-judgmental approach and the fact that he doesn't try to fit people into a mold of what you SHOULD do or be!.

How can I get the most out of therapy this time though!? Should I just concentrate on coming up with ways of improving my behavior now or should I unload all of the stuff from my childhood!? The first two sessions I just unloaded some of that baggage from my childhood which is nice since I don't talk about it with anyone else but I don't know if it will necessarily help me to do that!. Last session I did a little of both!. I unloaded and I asked him how I can improve my current behavior and anxiety!.

I guess I want to now if this sort of "talk" therapy works even!? The only therapy I've ever felt really worked was when I saw a cognitive-behavioral therapist when I was 17 and she was not at all really interested in talking about issues or pain or hurt from the past!.

I guess I wonder if just talking does help because sometimes it is very hard to talk about this stuff and leaves me feeling bad for a few days afterward!. Is this working and worth it!? Www@Answer-Health@Com

Talk therapy works great, especially with a great therapist to heal past wounds!. You said yourself that you "unloaded some of the baggage" from your childhood!. The present is a lot lighter when you're not toting past hurts and issues around!. Sometimes it's the past that causes our behaviors in the present, a lot of time without us even realizing it!. You know, this may not exactly answer your question, but I've always felt healing comes from within!. How could a paid stranger truly help you find your pace!? My advice would be to get out, volunteer with people less fortunate than you, find happiness and peace through love and compassion!.

If there is one business I would advocate, it would be perhaps martial arts, like tai chi!. It teaches you composure, focus, balance!. When your head is clear and silent, through those kinds of exercise and often supplemented with meditation, the roots of your worries surface!. Through a journal, or just contemplation, YOU'LL then be able to reason what's wrong, and take the steps to change unwanted behaviors, or just gain the perspective to put the past behind you, hold no grudges, worries, etc!.

If you are bent on seeing a therapist-- to each her own-- maybe you could ask the individual!. What would be some good ways to make the most of our sessions together!. It's his job after all, to comfort you, guide you!.

Good Luck,

It is very good that you feel comfortable with this new person!.
Think about things you want to change in your life!.
Think about what you think you are missing out on in life!.
Think about what is getting in the way of you being content!.
Sometimes our past may come up!. Sometimes we do feel sadder after an appointment than we did when we walked in the door!. This is because we looked at something that is painful to think about or feel!. Keep going and you will grow!. Best Wishes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I really like cognitive behavioral therapists, for the fact that they are concerned with the now!. If you constantly talk about and dredge up your past, you never let go of it and it is your baggage for life!. I am of the opinion that to progress you need to deal in the now, and let the past go!. The psychologist will let you go on and on about whatever you want to, that is what he gets paid to do, and paid well!.!.!.why should he stop you!? But, if you want to improve your mental status now, you need to deal with the now, not the past!. You can do nothing to alter what has happened!.!.!.you can alter what you do now!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
