If your sibling has a mental disorder, what is the likelihood you also have it?!

Question: If your sibling has a mental disorder, what is the likelihood you also have it!?
Answers:
On my mother's side of the family, there is a long history of clinical depression!. I also have depression, yet my brother does not!. In many cases, mental disorders are genetic!. However, please don't assume that if your sibling has a disorder, you will also get it!.

I don't remember much of my high school biology, including genetics!. This may not be scientifically accurate, but you will get the general idea!. Some genes you will get primarily from your mother and other genes from your father!. Your sibling might acquire "more" genes from your father and less from your mother!.

For example, let's say your father is very tall and your mother is short!. When it comes to the "height genes," you might be very tall like your father!. Your sibling might get his "height genes" from your mother, so your sibling will be short!.

The same principle applies to mental disorders or almost anything else!. This explains why I wound up with depression, but my brother did not!. Again, I don't remember high school genetics, but I hope you get the idea!. A doctor or anyone else who knows about genetics can explain it to you much better than I can!.

PLEASE NOTE: I go to a support group for people with depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, etc!. I often find out about one sibling having a disorder, while the other sibling is fine!. I hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

As paul mentioned, some disorders are linked through genetics and you are more likely to have it also!. If it is something that is not genetic, then the chances of you having it is the same as any other person!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
