What to you think about putting children on ADD medication?!

Question: What to you think about putting children on ADD medication!?
My son has a learning disability and last year he was diagnosed with ADD!. He's not one of those misbehaved children that just need dicipline, he really does have learning/speech problems etc!.!.!.

Anyway, his teachers and doctor are trying to convince me that I should put him on meds!. I really dont like the idea of putting my 7 year old on medication because he's not sick!. He doesnt pay attention, but he's not sick!.

Im torn because I know the medication would definetly help, but on the other hand I still think its dangerous!.

What do you think!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I felt the same way as you did when they wanted to my son on medication for ADHD!. After asking a lot of questions and reading up on the different medications out there i know it was the right thing to do!. He takes, Concerta and helps him so much!. No side effects either which was what i was most worried about!. Some would disagree with me but i know he can't live without it!. It's the only thing that calms him down enough to concentrate!. Makes life easier for all of us including him!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

ADD meds are overprescribed and are basically either an amphetamine (adderol) or methamphetamine (ritalin)!. Doctors hand them out like candy because they settle down hyperactive kids (so would cocaine if they prescribed it)!.!.!.

If his learning disability is definitively related to a lack of ability to pay attention, then it might be worth a try, but I'd explore other options first!.

Here's my rule of advice for giving kids Adderal or Ritalin!. Fill the prescription, and based on body weight, take the adult equivalent that your kid will be taking!. If they weight 50lbs and you weigh 150lbs, then take 3!.!.!. After you've tried it and know what it does - then make your decision!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think WAY more kids are put on these meds than need to be!.!.!.I taught 3 year olds at a preschool, and even at that age there were some on meds for this or just being "hyper"!. I just want to say that, yes, the meds might calm them, but does that help the child!?!?!? I think the meds make it easier for the adults in the child's life, not the
child!. The students I had behaved better for me when they were OFF
their meds than when they were ON them!.!.!.I really don't see that the
teachers at your child's school should in any way make a medical
recommendation!!! I also have seen kids who just aren't themselves
anymore after they start meds!.!.!.And, I really think the meds make it harder to see symptoms of other problems/illnesses!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Honestly dont do it, my brother got diagnosed that way, took those drugs for so long!. It messed him up because he felt like he wasnt allowed to be himself!. It was like a gateway drug for him and now he is taking more serious drugs because he doesnt like to slow down!.

You need to let you son get involved with extra activities and keep him motivated and positive!. Always give him abstractual work, because his mind is always thinking!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Last year my son was in ISS twice and in trouble every other day in school (this is no exaggeration)!. After an evaluation by a psychiatrist as well as the school counselor and much research, I put my son on ADD medication!. This year he has not been in trouble one time!. As a matter of fact the principal of the school came up to me and complimented my son on his attitude and how well he has been behaving this year!. It brought tears to my eyes!. This year has been a total turn around for all of us because of his diagnosis!.

I do agree that many children are diagnosed, but let's not forget the ones that truly have it!.

BTW, my son is also 7 years old!. It was a struggle for me in the decision to put him on medicine as well!.!.!. but, I am glad I did!. Every week now he has gotten to "draw out of the treasure box" at school!. He barely ever got to do that last year!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
