When a clinically depressed person goes to counseling...?!

Question: When a clinically depressed person goes to counseling!.!.!.!?
If a male has a history of hurting himself, suicidal thoughts, and a history of depression in the family, and he goes to see a counselor the day after he had hurt himself and had those thoughts, would they make him stay a few days at a mental facility, to start his medication and stuff, if they had found him to be clinically depressed!. Also, his mother doesn't know about these problems and he's not stable at home, is that another reason to make him stay at a facility until things are under control!?
I'm very worried because I haven't heard from since after he made the counseling appointment on Wednesday night and then hopefully went on Thursday!. But on Wednesday night, after making the appointment, he was very optimistic, talking about the future and what not!.
I guess I am just looking for some peace of mind!.
This is my boyfriend, btw!.
I live in Canada and he lives in the US!.
How much time should I give it before I start calling around!?
Personal experiences would be very helpful!.
Thank you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
when i was suffering from depression and suicidal tendencies i was told that i could be placed against my will into a facility for 72 hours or i could place myself into a facility for 6 days until my meds had a chance to kick in and start working or a judge could put me in an institution indefinitely!. i chose to put myself in for the six days!. i've never regretted my decision!. if your bf put himself in or someone else did it for him and you live in canada he will not be allowed to make long distance phone calls!. i would not worry about him!. i am sure that he is doing fine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If he expressed that he was not safe and he said he was going to hurt himself, the counselor might have help him be admitted to an inpatient unit!. It really depends on what he said to the counselor!.
If he went home after his appointment, he may not be answering his phone because of his depression!. Answering telephones is very hard when one feels pretty depressed!.
I think it is perfectly fine to call his home, e mail him, or get in touch with someone that could check on him!. Best Wishes to you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

that can be a factor - a person can enter a mental health facility on a voluntary basis for 72 hours!. a person can be mandated to a facility so both options are available!.

If the therapist believes that just daily one-on-one counseling will work then they'll go from that point!.

So what happened in your associate's/friend's situation, outside looking in, we don't know for sure!.
