Bipolars: Does your medication keep you fairly balanced?!

Question: Bipolars: Does your medication keep you fairly balanced!?
Mine only keeps me from going to the extreme either way, but doesn't keep me balanced enough to function well enough to accomplish anything that takes time!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder in 1993 after sustaining a closed head injury and it has been quite a ride!. The first med I was prescribed in the hospital was, of course Lithium!. Then Prozac, followed by Valproic acid, Deseryl, and a host of others!. While it did keep me stable for a while, I would ocassionally relapse and go to the hospital!. I was also prescribed Lisinopril for high blood pressure and that was a disaster in the making!. It did not interact well with the Lithium and soon I became toxic due to Lithium poisoning and again I was hospitalized!. I have been stable for 2 years after my psychiatrist switched me from Lithium to Lamictal (100 mg!. per day), 10 mg!. Prozac and 25 mg!. Seroquel!. I have had no problems since in spite of all the stress with our recent move which is still incomplete!. I firmly believe that the Lord surely had a hand in this plus having an understanding psychiatrist who listened patiently to me!.

I also read tons of literature about this disorder and especially learned much from Kay Jameson Redfield's book "Touched by Fire"!. This is a fantastic true account of her struggles with this and how she learned to handle it!. At the current time she is a clinical psychiatrist, author and has researched and written books and professional papers dealing with bi-polar disorder!. I recommend her books to everyone!.

My wife is on Lithium and is quite well balanced!. She functions well with two kids and a full time clerical job!. She was on other meds before, but Lithium has proven to be the best!.

A nice thing about Lithium is that it is a common salt, so there is no worry about side-effects, dependency, or mixing with other meds!.

When I was on medication, it was useless!. I never found the right one, and then I moved away and I haven't got help since!.

I've been really stupid, but it feels too late to stop now!.

If your meds aren't helping enough, ask your doctor if you can try something else!. And counselling might help, too!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
