THere's probably more than one illness that can cause urine to be purple, but the first thing I thought of was porphyria!. People with some forms of porphyria may urinate purple or pink when they've gotten too much sun!.
If you saw the purple urine in a urine bag at the hospital, that might be something else!. There's a rare chemical reaction that can occur between urine and the bag that turns the urine purple!.
