HELP! Where did I get this sudden fear of heights from?!

Question: HELP! Where did I get this sudden fear of heights from!?
Hubby and I took our 6 year old to the fair today!. I got on this big pirate ship that swings to and fro like 125 feet in the air with her and felt like I was about to have a heart attack! I was screaming and crying, while my daughter was laughing and throwing her hands in the air!.!.!.

Granted, it's been some years since I've been on an amusement park ride, but I never had a fear of heights before, and actually used to enjoy getting on the most death-defying rollercoasters, etc!. Not only am I boggled by my reaction, but I am truly having panic attacks just THINKING about our 2-hour plane ride next Monday up to NY!.

Question is: Can you just suddenly develop a phobia where you had none before!? How the hell do I overcome this!? I GOTTA go to NYC next week!!!

Answers:
I developed a fear of heights out of the blue as well, when at an earlier point in my life heights didn't bother me at all!. In fact, I always enjoyed getting up as high as any stucture would allow me to go (in Florida, where the land is mostly flat, flat, flat) I also enjoyed the more thrilling rides!.
It has to do with how your brain receives and processes information (it receives/processes info about everything we do)!. You are not just responding to the height of the ride, you are also responding to the back and forth movement!. Your brain can't process this fast enough and leaves you feeling unstable and triggers a fear of falling!. The fear triggers a panic response!.!.!.thus the sensation of an impending heart attack!.
You can manage this reaction to some degree, by conditioning your body to being tossed around!. For instance, make a point of getting on the swings when you take your daughter to the park!. You can go slow and gentle, and give your body a chance to adjust to the movement!. You will find that as your body adjusts, you can tolerate going faster and higher!. Regular exposure to this type of motion may desensitize you to it enough to tolerate the ride without such an extreme reaction!.
I still have a fear of heights, but it is not to everything and I can control it to some degree!. I can ride in a plane (even take a window seat) and not get any negative reactions!. I can get on a ladder as long as I still have ample ladder in front of me to give me a sense of stability!. As soon as I get to the step on the ladder that has my torso above it!.!.!.I freeze!. I can get on the roof and clear leaves off!.!.!.as long as I keep my attention focused on my chore, and don't look over the edge!. I can ride most of the fast rides at an amusement park (most, not all) as long as I spend some time on the playground equipment at the local park beforehand!.!.!.kinda conditioning myself to being propelled into motion by a force outside my control!.
You will find that this 'phobia' doesn't apply to every situation that involves heights!. You will also find that you can approach some things easier by pre-conditiioning yourself, while other things require you to adapt!.
If you do find yourself in a similiar situation where you are panicking!.!.!.take a deep slow breath!. Do not allow yourself to scream, but direct your attention to a point out in the distance that is more stable than your immediate surroundings!. (The farther away a point is, the less it is moving in relation to you!.) Focus on this point while also putting all your attention on controlling your breathing!. Deep and slow!.!.!. inhale, hold a few seconds, exhale!. This will allow your nervous system to calm down!. Giving in to the urge to panic and scream causes the body's physiological response to escalate, leading to a panic attack!. Note: on an airplane, you will want to focus on a point inside the plane that is closer and is moving with you (so appears to not be moving at all) rather than on a point out in the distance!. You may find you simply don't have a problem being in a plane!.!.!.the only point where you really feel the motion is on take off and landing!.
Don't know that you can 'cure' the phobia!. It is a glitch in the information processing in your brain!. You can manage it to some degree!.!.!.it takes learning what you react to and developing a way of conditioning your body to those activities, or making adjustments in how you approach any activity that involves height!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's probably because you've grown older and since it's been years you've forgotten how it feels to be on a roller coaster!. So now your body's not used to it and you freak out as if it's your first time going on a scary ride!. I think it's possible to develop a phobia at ANYTIME =]Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, you could develop anything within second - phobia, love, affection, masterbate, etc!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
