For anyone who has had counseling, could you please tell me what you thought of !

Question: For anyone who has had counseling, could you please tell me what you thought of it, did it help!?
I wonder if anyone who has been through counseling would let me know whether or not it helped them through their troubles!. For instance, did you find things out about yourself maybe that you had not considered before or were you able to look at what had happened in your life from a different perspective!? Also I would like to know how long you were in counseling for, what the pros and cons of it were for you personally and, well anything really that you don't mind sharing with me!. Thank you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have only had good therapy with psychiatrists!. They were psychodynamically trained, and therefore, were able to help me gain insight into what was causing difficulties in my life!. I prefer insight oriented therapy because, with understanding of my problems, I can find my own way out!.

Many therapists are only good enough for social support!. They will agree with everything you tell them, and be always on your side!. That kind of therapy makes people feel good, so they become addicted to the therapist, rely on the therapist to sooth their feelings during crisis!. You can be in this kind of therapy for years, without making the slightest bit of progress!. I've had an incompetent therapist for 6 months!. She was a psy!.d!. Everytime I got a new medication, she would look it up in her little god forsaken drug book!. "I have to know this", she said!. What for!? After a few times I told her to do that in her own time!.

There are also therapists who insist that they are always right, even if it requires telling you that you are crazy!. To them, the customer is always wrong!. Fire them immediately upon identification!.

Different types of behavioral therapy are very much in vogue now!. They are not without advantages!. People with serious personality disorders, do not benefit from insight!. In those cases, behavioral therapy can improve their lifes without requiring them to have any understanding of their problems whatsoever!. Insurance companies love those, because they can see result in shorter period of tme!.

In my experience, I have been able to explain the behaviors of people around me with psychoannalytic theory, better than with any thing that came out of behaviorist theory!. Behaviorists claim that their approach is more scientific than psychoannalytic theory, because it is empirical!. The way I see it, they take the body while rejecting the soul!. Kind of immoral if you think about it!. Lets not forget that Einstein was bs when confronted with quantum theory because he couldn't tolerate the "uncertainty" that is inherent of quantum theory!. One who neglects history, is condemned to repeat it!. Lets not reapeat his mistake;)

One last thing!. If you end up making the decision to seek psychotherapy, do trust your instincts and leave the therapist as soon as you feel somethings not right!. Don't ever buy into that "I will change my approach" type of attempt to keep you!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am sure many people are helped by it!. However, a dear friend of mine told me the trick to it is to keep speaking with different counselors until you find one who is really on your wavelength, that way you will essentially trust the person and some genuine communication can occur which will help you!. I hope this helps you understand how to fine-tune the art of counseling!. My friend "went through" about eight counselors before he found one that he felt he could really open up and talk to, and then the counseling sessions were very beneficial to him, offering him many alternatives to putting his life back in order, good sense and right direction again!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had suffered with really bad anxiety for years!. I saw a counselor for a while!. She helped some, in that she gave me a place to talk for an hour and I paid her money to listen!.

Then I went through a very devastating break up with a man who used me something awful!. I sought counseling then!. It bought me some time and eventually the pain went away, but the counseling wasn't any help

When my husband and I divorced, I sought counseling from a counselor trained in the type of addiction my husband suffered from!. He was a big help for a while!.

I hope I never need counseling again!. It is a lot of money and doesn't do much!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi it is good to talk but at the end of the day it is only you that can make things happen,i found the person i went to see just sat there and said very little then after an hour just looked at her watch and said time is up shall i book you in for next week!. I felt that i had just wasted an hour talking to myself but evry one is different you may find it helps most of it depends on the person you are seeing!.Good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

Most "counselors" are psych bachelor degree's!. As such, their advice is!.!.!. limited, generic, and sometimes patronizing!.

The only person that's every really understood how the world works, and been willing to explain it to me, is my psychiatrist!. Yes, I said psychiatrist!. He's been treating me for depression for years, and it's the best help I've ever had access to!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I spent a load of money on a shrink who made me realize I have the ability to think for myself!.

Had to attend counseling with an ex!.!.!.very insulting to be told "thus and such" by a kid half your age and life experience who could really care less about the individual in counseling!.

good luck, babe!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was in counseling for 8 months - all she did was write things down - I felt cheated - she was useless ( my friends were better to talk to and free)

I've done quite a bit of counseling, therapy, and medication!. I had good and bad experiences!.

The very first counselor I went to suggested I solve my issues by going to church!.!.!.her church!. I'm an atheist!. Needless to say, I found that particular counselor to be the exact opposite of helpful!.

I then went on to behavior therapy, which was under the same program that counselor worked for!.!.!.but I absolutely loved it!. They helped me learn how to choose which obsessive thoughts/rituals I could stop and how to stop!. I still do a lot of rituals!.!.!.particularly the handwashing, but I now have the information and techniques that work for me if I decide a ritual has started interfering with daily life!.

I then went on to a physciatrist/counseling team!. I did a variety of meds and met with my counselor every week!. I hated it!. The meds worked!.!.!.!.but the side effects to me were NOT worth it!. My counselor also called my husband "high risk" and told me if I considered having children with him, I should expect to raise them on my own!. I never went back and I told the physciatrist to take me off the meds!.

Here I am now!.!.!.no meds, pregnant (and my wonderful husband is not only here, but very excited about our baby,) and happy!. Still the same high strung, anxious, obsessive person I've been since I can remember!.!.!.but happy none the less!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
