Why is suicide and desire to murder a side effect of anti-depressant drugs?!

Question: Why is suicide and desire to murder a side effect of anti-depressant drugs!?
Answers:
it is only a side effect of it, if someone is taking an anti-depressant that is not right for them!. we have to go through 2 or 3 sometimes before we get the right one!. as soon as those thoughts come up, one needs to tell the doctor so he can give the solution!. they are mind drugs to begin with, so the wrong one can be damaging!. the right one can be lifesaving!. different ones work for different people!. the answer as to why, would have to have something to do with it doing something in our brain chemistry that is going haywire!. bad connection, sort of speak!. i know it is true they can do this to people, but it may be doing it to people who already had tendacies for it!. it could just magnify it!. i am no doctor!. but, i do know it happens!. can not honestly say for sure why!. but can say for sure, it happens sometimes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

For those who are denying possible suicidal side effects: Why, then, are there labels on the medications themselves warning people of the possible side effect of suicide!? No one is saying that they cause suicide in most people, and no one is doubting how many people have been helped by these medicines, but it is ignorant to deny that there has been an observable enough link that the FDA requires a black box label on anti-depressants!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

THESE ARE NOT SIDE EFFECTS OF ANTI-DEPRESSANT MEDICATIONS!.

Some debate concerns certain medications (Prozac) and the possibility of increased risk of suicide, but I do not feel that the medication is a factor at all!. You must remember that suicidal thoughts, having a plan to suicide, or having attempted suicide are serious symptoms of major depression!. With those symptoms already affecting the patient, it would be difficult to state that the medication had any adverse affect!.

I have worked in the mental health field since 1970 and believe me, Prozac has saved many lives and produces fewer side-effects than most other medications!. But all patients using psychotropic medication must be monitored closely and people with depression often become isolative and do not follow through with medical treatment!. Other risk factors include patients who feel much better and who quit taking their medication altogether - they may encounter severe stress which they are unable to deal with when their medication has been stopped voluntarily!. I have worked with hundreds of patients with a diagnoses of major depression and have never heard any of them say that their suicidal thoughts worsened while taking Prozac!.

EDIT: It is always best to consult an experienced doctor before taking any medication and to become thoroughly familiar with the risk factors!. But to say that somebody has committed murder because they took Prozac is simply idiotic!. People should not be discouraged from taking a potencially life-saving medication because of stories like this!. What is ironic is that many more murders and suicides occur among people who use alcohol, but that hasn't seemed to slow down the consumption of alcohol in our country!.

Clearly the general public has a very strong bias concerning the use of psychotropic medications!. I have often heard people tell complete strangers that they should quit taking their meds and that has been a big problem in treating people who have psychiatric symptoms!. 1/3 of psychiatic hospital admissions are due to patients who stop taking their medications against medical advice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm going to agree with the first person who answered, these are not side effects of antidepressant medications!. There is a phenomenon with depression that people who want to kill themselves don't do it because they are so depressed and can't gather up the motivation and energy to do it!. However, once they are on medication, there's a point early on in treatment where they have more motivation but are still really depressed!.!.!.that's why they try to kill themselves!. Suicidal thoughts/actions are NOT side effects of the medication!. Because of this phenomenon, that's why it's important to have a doctor who is treating the person and that the family/friends of the person monitor the person's behavior for any negative changes in the person's emotions, mood, and behavior!.

As for murder, it is not a side effect either!. Antidepressants have been unfairly blamed for causing murders!. They do not cause murders!.

I've worked in mental health for several years and have never seen anybody who has tried to kill themselves or anybody else as a result of their antidepressant medication!. Quite the contrary!.!.!.the vast majority respond well to meds and their depression lifts!. Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Gene said it well, and is clearly well versed in the clinical side of depression!.

I might add that in my own experience, at the depth of my depression, I was troubled by constant looping thoughts of suicide, but never had any intention of acting on those thoughts!. I understood intellectually that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and I would never put my family through that!. However, I couldn't help how I felt, only how I behaved!.

I've wondered if, for some people, they don't have the energy to act on the suicidal ideas, then the medication gives them a bit more energy before it has a chance to affect the mood!. The suicidal thoughts would precede the medication, not be a result of them!. However, I have only personal experience, not clinical experience, so I don't know what happens in the larger community of depressed patients!.

It took me three tries with three different medications before my depression lifted!. Oddly, the one that helped is widely used in anti-smoking medication!. I never smoked!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My Neighbour poured gasoline on his wife, kids and himself and lit a match!.!.!. Prozac to blame!. Horrible horrible experience!.!.!.
