An ADD Test costs $400+ !?!?!

Question: An ADD Test costs $400+ !!?!!?
I recently went to a new psychiatrist!. We sat down for quite a long time and went over everything!. I've always had strong symptoms of ADD and I explained that I would like to try some medication for it!.

I have genetic depression which apparently is quite common to have ADD with as well!. I also tested positive on the ADD test sheet she gave me!. On top of all that I was recently on Wellbutrin which is another type of mild stimulant that has been prescribed for ADD and it helped great with any attention problems, so I've shown I respond well!.

Yet oddly in the end she still recommended the full ADD/ADHD test service which costs around $400!.

Now I completely understand that I should be properly tested etc etc!. Yet at $400, there's slim chance of me going through with it!. I've looked through the other yahoo answers and I'm getting mixed responses!.

Any thought on this issue!? Is this standard procedure and what has to be done!?!? $400!!!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you want to try the medication, there are plenty of general practitioners who would be willing to put you on it without making you take the test!. Just go and tell them that you are in school and that you need the medication!. They will have you fill out a short personality profile and evaluate you!. Some may refer you to a psychiatrist again, but most won't!. The best thing to do is ask around a college campus, since many students there are either on adderall or know where to get it!. I have been taking some form of stimulant off and on for ADD since I was in 2nd or 3rd grade!.

The thing is, it's a very difficult disorder to diagnose properly, and many symptoms are quite general!. If you have a reason to be on ADD medication, such as needing to concentrate, pay attention, lose weight (not an approved drug for this, but I believe some of the ingredients are sold under a different name as a prescription weightloss drug), then it will most likely work for you whether you have ADHD or not!.

When I moved away from home for college and went to a new GP to get my meds continued, all I did was tell him I had a history of being on it, and a history of ADD!. All he did was ask me to fill out the 2 page personality profile, ask me a few questions, and he let me have what I asked for without ever asking me to have medical records sent to him!.

You can easily find the symptoms of ADHD, and maybe the same or a similar test as the one your MD wanted to give you in a book!. All the psychiatrist will do is have you fill out a personality profile, meaure your times at completing some common logic tests, etc!.

The thing is, so many people are so quick to say they have ADD because they simply get bored and can't concentrate, or because their mind wanders!. Having lived with it all my life, I can tell you there is much more to it than that!. It has subsided quite a bit now, but when I was younger, it was not just that I was bored, but that I could not keep my mind from wondering to other subjects no matter how hard I tried, could not keep my mouth shut in class no matter how much I was punished or suspended, could not keep myself from saying and doing inappropriate things on an impule no matter how many times I was whipped or punished!.

Adderall helped me very much to curb these impulsive behaviors!. I stopped taking it when I first started college, and I graduated in my first degree with a little under a 3!.0!. This doesn't sound that bad, but my first degree was in Mass Communications which is very easy at the school where I went!. I went back to school again for nursing because I decided I hadn't gone after something that would allow me to use my intelligence as much as I should have (indecisiveness is another trait of people with ADD)!. I take the medicine now for this degree, and am extremely organized, have inhuman study habits, and am in the top 5% of my class with a 3!.7 overall GPA in one of the most difficult undergrad curriculums!.

Different people have varying degrees of symptoms, and yours may be totally different!. I would just say do some research yourself and decide if you think you have it!. If you think it will help, and it does, why would you need a medical opinion from a psychiatrist!? A book that really helped me understand the disease when I was younger was a book called, "So you mean I'm not lazy, crazy or stupid!?" and I forget the author!. But this book puts it in very easy to understand terms and will help you to understand the basics and the not-so-basics of the disorder!. Hope this helped!. E-mail me if you need anything else!.

Actually $400 is pretty cheap!. To have the full WAIS-R evaluation done for learning and developmental disabilities costs about $1,200!. Instead of wanting to be pigeonholed and medicated, maybe a visit to a holistic chiropractor would do a whole lot more good for you!. I've seen remarkable improvements in children with ADD after receiving spinal adjustments particularly to the upper cervical area, the area that is most closely related to brain function!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If the Psychiatrist feels that you should be tested, then your insurance should cover the test, or at least most of it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
