Answers:
They don't relate!. They are two completely different types of mental disorder!.

Schizophrenia is a type of psychotic disorder where the individual experiences hallucinations (false sensory experiences) and/or delusions (false beliefs), blunted emotions, some degree of disorganized thinking and social withdrawal!. Schizophrenia is generally thought to be genetic!.

Dissociative Identity Disorder is caused by a traumatic event such as sexual abuse and the individual forms "alternate identities!." DID is somewhat controversial and some mental health professionals are skeptical that it even exists!.

In popular culture, there has been a long fascination with DID (formerly Multiple Personality Disorder) related to some books and movies!. Many people confuse it with schizophrenia (which means "split-mind") while DID has been called "split-personalities!."

I have worked in mental health since 1987 and I can say that I have heard of thousands of people with schizophrenia and maybe 25 or less with DID!. In my experience, every person I know of with DID was female and had been sexually abused in childhood!. I have never heard of anyone who had schizophrenia and it "led to" DID!.

I don't know where you read that, but I think you are either mistaken or the person who wrote it didn't know anything about mental illness!. I'm not trying to be rude to you, I am just being honest!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

As one with DID, and who knows others with DID, I can tell you there is no link between DID and schizophrenia!. I think you are confused, as the second poster noted, or whoever wrote what you read was confused!. I have known -- or know -- 6 others and none of them (or I) have or had schizophrenia that led to DID!. Small sample, yes, but still significant, since it is drawn from across the country and age groups!. All have PTSD with DID and were abused -- and trauma is common among DID survivors!. Schizophrenia, on the other hand, has more genetic factors, than environmental ones, albeit there is some DID research with twins showing genetic factors as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

That doesn't make any sense at all and I would be interested to see where you read that!.

Typically DID occurs after incredibly traumatic childhood experiences with sexual/physical abuse, torture, and neglect!. This is a coping mechanism!.

Schizophrenia is more common among highly intelligent individuals and it seems to have a strong herreditary involvement!.

I don't see any reason why one would lead to another especially since DID is so rare!. Then again, the human mind is a beautiful and very strange thing!. I would urge you to look back on that article you found since I'm not so sure that you read it properly!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
