Why are people with BPD treated mainly with a) disrespect b) seen as a nuisance !

Question: Why are people with BPD treated mainly with a) disrespect b) seen as a nuisance and c) a pain !?
I have a friend who's got BPD and for a time doctors were 95% adament I had it when I was 18-20!. My friend thankfully is now better, but he has been in and out of hospital most of his life!. I was very unwell at 18; I had a breakdown and attempted to take my own life and so was sectioned under the Mental Health Act for a month!. My psychiatrist though was a complete pig!. I was very vulnerable and he used to reduce me to tears, and treat me like dirt!. My Mum and Dad were involved in my care, and Mum would say things like, sometimes she can be so charming, yet other times she can be so cruel, and he'd reply "yes, BP's do that"!. So not only was I treated like ****, I was labelled!. I then had to go and live in a "theraputic community" with other people with the disorder for a while, and again, they were treated like dirt, except by a few staff who treated them like people!. Now all these doctors realise that I went through a very rocky period as a teen and its more on the diagnosis of severe depression!. Even my family have discriminated against me! I know things get said in arguments etc, but my Mum has referred to me as "The Looney" every now and then!.

Now I am on the right tracks to health, I work in the psychiatric unit where I was once sectioned!. I look after many people with BPD and treat them as I would want to be treated and as people, not labels!. However, some staff still keep on about "so and so is a nuisance, attention seeking" etc!. Why arent people with BPD seen as individuals and human beings who cant help what they do sometimes instead of seen as a pain in the neck by doctors etc!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Because they are frustrated with a mental disorder that their "magic" tablets can't treat and if their tablets can't treat it they feel powerless and inadequate, and if they feel inadequate they think the BP's are toying with them purposely when it is beyond their control!. The staff are happier with concrete mental health symptoms like hallucinations and delusions which they don't have - the BP's may trigger off something in themselves which they have to a milder degree and deny to themselves and want to hide such as attention seeking!.
Good on you for being such a caring, understanding health worker - these people act like they do because they are in severe pain!.

PS if your mum calls you the looney, don't take it serious - do something like hopping on one leg and saying "zilly zoop" in a weird voice over and over and laugh about it, see how she reacts to that - it should be good fun!. Don't try and challenge her lack of understandingWww@Answer-Health@Com

Here is a good site I found about Depression!. I has a lot of info and covers multiple facets of depression!.

I don't know but you are scaring the **** out of me, since I'm trying to find out whether I have it or not, thought I was just going for a diagnosis, but don't want treatment, I think I'm a 100% that I don't want anything to do with psychologists!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

To answer your question succinctly, people with BPD are treated with disrespect and as a nuisance because People, in general, are ignornant, and do not understand the ramifications of the mentally ill!. They are scared and for that reason they seem to shun the mentally ill!. Most people who are mentally ill can, in all liklihood, lead a normal life once they get on the right mix of meds!. But its easier for the ignorant people to hide their heads in the sand!. In the long run, it is those people who are mentally misinformed or just plain ignorant and in essence, it is they who are mentally deformed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

that is really sad!!

a majority of the population are sheep and are scared to react diiferently to how they assume their ment to!. Hence u get many doucheb@gs treating ppl with mental disorders (or those with pericived disorders) like sh!t !!

its disgusting but u just gotta be above it !.!.!. its hard but it gets easier when u relise how moronic 99% of the population actually are!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ok quick question !.!.!.!.BPD are you trying to talk about Bipolar or Borderline Personality Disorder!? BPD is the typical acronym used for Borderline Personality Disorder!. BP is typical used for Bipolar!. Am just not sure which you are talking about since you used both acronyms!.

But either way there is still a lot of stigma with mental illnesses!. It is getting better, but is still there!. And even though someone has a MD or otherwise works with people with mental illness doesnt mean they are excluded from viewing things with a stigma!. Is also just hard for people without the illness to understand what it is like!.!.!.!.!.tend to view things more a choosing to behave and be that wayWww@Answer-Health@Com

I think people have this bad attitude about BPD because they don't understand it and therefore have no compassion for the person suffering!.If you can find the right people who know how to treat this disorder, they are wonderfull!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi Ade c,
I think it's because they don't know how best to help us, it presents itself in so many different ways and two people with BPD can be completely different!. I think it's also cos two of the symptoms are manipulative and attention seeking which in society is looked at very negatively and not for what it really is, a cry for help and fear of abandonment/rejection!. People are always afraid of what they don't understand and i think few people esp health professionals know much about BPD and it's this lack of understanding that leads us to be treated this way!. I think they also find the fact that people with BPD can become dependent on them difficult to handle!. There are a few exceptions out there tho, my GP has been amazing, i don't know what i would have done or where i would be now without her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
