The problem with most anti-depressants is that they help lift mood, even out the lumps and bumps but have no affect upon your thoughts and feelings!. In fact, anti-depressants of all kinds can be a block to accessing the feelings that are making you poorly!.

Poor self confidence, poor self esteem, lack of confidence, feelings of isolation, betrayal, fear, anger, all of the things that go with depression cannot be dealt with by tablets alone!.

You need psychological input too!. Counselling of some sort, practical help in day to day living!.

I've been on and off anti-depressants since 1986!. I'm on them just long enough for me to attempt resolutions to my issues!.

I think you should try the antidepressants for the recommended 6 to 9 months, to help lift the syptoms, then you really need therapy to address the causes!.

Be gentle on yourself

Hi,

I think most people are worried when first starting an anti-depressant!. When I went to my GP finally after struggling alone with depression for ages, I knew I needed some help!. When the word "Prozac" came up though I thought "Oh no!" cuz of the negative reputation it often has!.

The thing is, anti-depressants affect everyone differently!. The idea of anti-depressants making you "numb" or that they are some kind of magic happy pill is a myth!. If they did instantly give you some kind of addictive happiness then everyone would be on them weather they are clinically depressed or not! They are designed to give you the lift you need to be able to do the rest of the work for yourself by working on the way you think and cope!. You're more likely to recover from depression if you combine them with a talking therapy like counselling or CBT!. If you do that, then you'll feel confident when the time comes to come off anti-depressants that you'll be able to cope without them!.

My personal experience of an anti-depressant: The side effects were most intense in the first 2 weeks but passed!. Although the original dose lifted my mood a bit it still left me too low to be able to manage so my dr increased it!. This really helped and first the time in YEARS my depression is better!.

Anyway, I'll shut up now! Good luck!. Remember if side effects persist with the first drug you're prescribed, or it doesnt help you then you can go back to your GP and ask to try something else!. Unfortunatley some people have to experiment before they find something that works for them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was severely depressed and was prescribed anti-depressants!. They made me confused, I couldn't think, my mind was just confused!. I have been off them now 6 months and finally I am starting to make progress by e-mailing the Samaritans!. They have helped me focus on positives in my life, positives I couldn't see before!. Depression is the worst experience, it nearly took my life and it has taken me a three year battle to get where I am today!. It isn't easy, it's extremely lonely, but in my case if I stayed on anti depressants, I wouldn't have made any progress!. Numbing your mind is not a long term solution to what has triggered this illness!. If you ever want to e-mail feel free to get me at c_w_b1974@yahoo!.co!.uk!. Take care and whatever you do I hope it helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I suffer from depression which can be severe at times and have discussed this with my Psychotherapist and my Occupational Therapist and they both recommend staying off anti-depressants!.

Some of the reasons I choose to not depend on anti-depressants!.!.!.

!.!.!.They can make you drowsy and this in turn can effect motivation!.

!.!.!.If I took them then I would be unable to drive as they could affect my level of concentration without me being aware of it or cause my concentration to suddenly and without notice diminish to a dangerous level!. If I decided to take them whilst continuing to drive then If anything serious occurred I could be regarded as under the influence of drugs etc drugs as in prescribed medication!. Some medications say on the bottle etc DO NOT DRIVE OR OPERATE MACHINERY WHILST TAKING THIS DRUG/MEDICINE!. Etc (Block Capitals used for emphasis not as shouting or abuse etc)!.

!.!.!. I don't have the pressure of having to remember to take medication all the time!.

!.!.!. I prefer to cope using aspects of Positive Mental Health!. See Below!.

I suggest you consider antidepressants as a last resort after trying other things and getting a second opinion from either a therapist or other professional person!.

If you do decide to take the antidepressants do some research about side effects etc and evaluate if its worth taking!. See Below!.

If you need them than take them, the first one you try may not be right and you may have to try a couple of more!. It will not be a fun process, you will have side effects but nothing you can't get through!. Bottom line is if you are at a point in you life where the problem is interfering in your life it's time to take some action!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've had three different ones!.
The best thing is they stop the suicidal thoughts!.
The bad things are body shakiness and fidgeting that I can't control!.
I took Lexapro at first, but I hated the lack of sex drive and lack of orgasm!. I would get the same amount of pleasure if I ejaculated or urinated!.
I didn't have that problem with Pexeva or Celexa, but I still have moments of shakiness!.
I'm just happy that I don't want to kill myself anymore!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

ADs!.!.!.!.helpful!.!.though!.!.!.unnecessary!. They can be quite addictive!. I say dont go onto them!. i used to and nearly killed myself, i overdosed!. And yeah!.!.!.

My advice is to get a pycologist, phycitrist!. ive been going and its changed my life, ive come from a suicide crazy girl to a normal happy girl!.

Hope this finds you well!.

Anti depressants will not make you feel happy!. What they do is keep depression at bay!.They will help you to feel more like your normal self!. It may take a little time for your system to become accustomed to them but they will make a huge improvement in the long runWww@Answer-Health@Com

you don't need it!.!.!.you need to develop your own philosophy on life!.!.!.logically connect everything thus far, don't forget what happened, and see those traumatic events as a time and place you grew stronger out of, stronger versus the next person!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i was on paxil and it made me really tired and woke up in the middle of the night with cotton mouth!. but everyones different!. and each med is different for everyone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
