Why did so many State Mental Hospitals close in the 80s?!

Question: Why did so many State Mental Hospitals close in the 80s!?
!.!.!. and why were the residents released out into the public!? Didnt that make things worse for them!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
The biggest reason for the closings was the cutback in medicaid funds by the Federal Government, thanks to the policies of Reagan!. The states received matching funds for the hospitalization of people with mental illnesses!. The feds cut back and the states couldn't afford to keep the hospitals running!. In addition, there were several suits in courts to mainstreams the residents back into the public particularly those who were developmentally disabled not just those who suffered from mental illnesses such as paranoia and the like!. I hope this helps!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Most likely because more treatments where developed and less people were just relinquished to livingout their lives in mental hospitals for their own safety and the saftey of others!. Paranoid schitophrania and sever bipolar along with many other illness used to be where untreated, many people did end up hospitalized very long term!.!.!.!.some more as a care home then just as a hospital stay!. Now impatient hospitalization is typicaly relitively short term to get the illness under control and then the person can function like anyone else!. The 80s was probably the very end of so many people being in long term stays!.!.!.!.though they were probably reletivly empty and costing the state too much to keep them open for a while before!. Think steriotypical padded walls straight jackets crazy!.!.!.!.!.it does have some basis!.!.!.!.!.isnt really true today though!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Do you have any data besides the comment!? I am not doubting but what facts do you have!.

Dorothea Dix (mental) Hospital in Raleigh NC is being closed this year after being around since 1856! What they will do with the pantents remains to be seen!. I think they will transfer them to other facilities!.

http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Dorothea_Di!.!.!.

The WHY is money money money money money!.

It cost big money to have mental health hospitals (resorts & hotels)!. Is it cost affective and does it help!? Are these hospitals helping or are the just life time living assistance residence for mentally ill that cost way too much!?

Yes many of them released do end up homeless or in jail!. Jail is bad but they do get some help, meds and isolated so they can't hurt themself or others!.

I don't think the street or jail is the place for the mental ill, but it has always been a problem with society as what to do!. I can tell you being mentally ill in America is better than other countries where they are either murdered or put into jail with no help what so ever (hoping they kill them self)!.

Now some do deserve to be in jail, if they are violent and mentally ill!. Some do need to be released to make it on their own, some need a low level living assistance, not a full hospital!.

Sad situation!. Mental illness is just a terrible tragic thing!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It was medico-political BS, releasing such people into "the care of the community" as a way of saving billions of $!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ok well the first thing about the 80s is that people were kinda crazy to begin with!. Didn't you see the way they used to dress!? They were released because they closed the hospital!. Once the hospitals were closed they began to attack metropolitan and later residential areas until everyone who had brains was not a mental patient as well!. See the move 28 days later!. Its sort of like that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
