Question: Why is it impossible for some people to simply shut up!?
I'm all in favor of being friendly, and taking a few minutes to stop and chat with your coworkers!. After a while though, I need to sit down and be quiet and focus on my work!.
I tell others that unless it specifically has to do with my job, PLEASE do not interrupt me with inane chatter about the weather, sports, what a loser your spouse is, how much you love shoes, your political beliefs, how much your hemorrhoids hurt, and whatever other non-essential-but-you-think-it's-the-end!.!.!. nonsense you blabber about!.
At first I just smile and nod and go back to work !. !. !. then I politely say that I don't want to be interrupted !. !. !. then I finally blow my top and tell people to shut up!. After that, I get criticized as being "unfriendly" and "unprofessional"!.
Oh, I'm all in favor of "shooting the sh*t" every now and then !. !. !. but after a while, why can't people just shut up and chill out!? What is it with this culture of narcissism that EVERYTHING must be shared!?

Just ignore them if they come up to talk!.!.!. if they pop off something rude, simply say, "Hey, man, I'm just trying to get some work done, I'll hit you up when I've got a break!."
Yelling shut-up at someone is unprofessional and very unfriendly, regardless if they are annoying!.
You should respond with what I said above!.!.!. in no way can that comment be taken as rude or unprofessional!.

I think that people talk about personal issues too much at work because they are working longer hours so much of their life is spent in the workplace!. Also, they may be trying to get perspective from the different opinions of others!.
Due to longer work hours, heavy distraction and alienation from family due to dependency on high tech devices, and the high stress levels created by our failing economy, people are starving for some kind of feeling of community!.
I sympathize completely with your wish to not be interrupted during the workday, however!. There are some nice ways to acknowledge the first chatty remark they make so you validate them and then immediately say, "Maybe we could chat about this at lunch!. I have to get back to work now!. Talk to you later!." Say it in a friendly smiling way and turn away from them and start your work!. Over time, everyone will realize that you are not the "go to" person for personal chats during work hours!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
