Like many others here, I've suffered from severe anxiety and depression!. (I'm Bipolar)

Whenever I'm anxious or depressed, I run (or do some kind of exercise)!. The endorphins in your brain that are released lift your mood!.

Also, if your anxious, find a place to rest that doesn't have a lot of stimuli (stimuli = tv, loud noises, lots of people talking, etc!.)!. Usually a dark room does it for me!.

Bananas have been proven to help both!.

Some kind of hobby can also help!. I play guitar when I'm down or anxious!. It takes my mind off of everything else!.

L-Theanine - the natural extract in tea that shows down brain waves and helps with the anxiety, I'm not so sure on the depression aspect, but Theanine really helps with anxiety, you take on one pill and you feel a difference, this stuff is amazing!. Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc!.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc!.
