Personality disorder/Therapy question?!

Question: Personality disorder/Therapy question!?
Hi -

I was just interested in knowing!.!.!.

Of course not wholly reliant on the accuracy of self-diagnosis, I do believe myself to possibly be suffering from a personality disorder!. Throughout my entire life I've had a great deal of difficulty understanding certain behaviours and their causes from my teen years!.

I've only just recently begun counselling to tackle a very long, ongoing depression and wondered perhaps if this is just a typical side-effect to processing some very painful emotions, might it be my way to avoid certain feelings to want to label it instead!?

I live in the UK and what I want to know is if my therapist is qualified to diagnose me if this was the case!? I know she's qualified to deal in the area of psychotherapy with a P!.G Dip!. in Counselling; would this extend to prescribing medication or diagnosing me if need be!?

I don't wish to be a hypochondriac, becoming comfortable in a 'victim mentality' or expect a diagnosis of a mental disorder or a prescription of meds to ease the work I have ahead of me, but I feel counselling alone seems to treat only surface emotions and not particularly their causes!. As I'm new to this, I'm fairly unfamiliar with what I'm expected to have going on in my head!.

If this helps, I'm 19!. For an extensive decade, I have had a background in self-medicating with alcohol and painkillers; eating disorders, co-dependent relationships, passive-aggressiveness; depression, panic attacks, controlling mother!.!.!.

Can anyone shed some light on what to do!?

Thanks in advance!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
OK, firstly the only person who can diagnose is a medical practitioner!.
Secondly, I think you are right to question whether your counselling is appropriate!. Most counsellors are qualified to work short term with people who are worried about particular issues in their life!. From what you say about your long history of self-abusive behaviour I think you need to see a therapist through your local mental health services!. They will work with you in a more challenging way to explore why you behave as you do and to help you to change your behaviour!. They may also suggest group therapy!.

you shud find sumthin that bring peace to yourself!. like meditating or expressing your feelings to sumone or therapist!.

you see!.!.we cant shed light to people who suffer mental problems!.
we can only show you paths which its totally up to you whether or not you want to follow!.those who forces will only make you to worst!.

sooo try to solve it by finding peace of mind!. go to the countryside or sumthin!.
(yeh I know its sound hippy but its fact that peace of mind or calmness of mind can usually avoid mental problems)Www@Answer-Health@Com

The last paragraph of you statement is where the answer is to be found!. Everyone of the symptoms you describe are caused by alcohol!.
Alcohol causes a biochemical imbalance in the brain, and mental illness will occur!. Your doctor should be able to explain this is more depth!.
These symptoms will remit when alcohol is no longer consumed!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's important to get a proper diagnosis from a professional!.

Talk to your doctor and ask him/her to refer you to the local mental health services!. The stigma of having a mental health condition is a far less problem than refusing to get appropriate support for yourself!.

It's very hard to get long term therapy/counselling on the NHS!.

Hi, it sounds like you could have Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)!. I've was diagnosed with it myself 3 years ago and it'd taken until now to come to terms with what illness I have!. Your symptoms sound very similar to my own!. BPD is a serious mental illness (though not a severe one like Bi-polar or Schizophrenia)!. To get properly diagnosed you will need to see a psychiatrist who will also be able to prescribe medication, I'm on an anti-depressant and an anti-psychotic and the combination works quite well!. I'm afraid that your therapist cannot prescribe medications only a doctor can do that!. Ask your GP for a referral!.

Unfortuantely, most people who develop BPD have been victims to abuse (sexual more commonly, but also emotional and physically)!. So it is quite normal for the "Victim Mentality" to be there, however with the correct help you, like myself, can change from being a victim to being a survivor!. Any medications you may recieve will help calm the symptoms and keep you stable so aiding the psychology to overcome the issues behind the illness!.
