Diagnosed with depression but, Could I be Bipolar?!

Question: Diagnosed with depression but, Could I be Bipolar!?
I was diagnosed with unipolar depression a few years ago and have been on medication since!. Recently my mum and I had a chat and she voiced her concerns that I may be Bipolar!.

I have episodes of extreme depression often lasting a week or more and also have periods that I can only describe as being really good!. There are normal periods in-between!.

During the "ups" I can be extremely hyper, very happy or irritable (I can switch between these two emotions very quickly), and experience a lot of creativity (I only paint when in these moods and often can not stop until it's completed)!. I find it very difficult to switch off and sleep during this time!. When in this mood I have been known to clean the house from top to bottom (incl!. re-grouting tiles) and I once painted and decorated an entire kitchen on my own - not stopping until very late at night!.

I get on at work well - my co-workers generally find me hard working and good fun!. I do have days where I fly through everything and then end up re-jigging our filing system or something!. The times I have issues are when I am very down and can't stop crying (although this has only affected work once)

The high days only last a few days, never really longer than a week, sometimes they can be very rapid transitions between high and low - I have to say I thought this to be rather normal!. But mum says she's noticed it more since I moved out of home and that she's worried about me!.

I spoke to my Fiance about this and he doesn't think i'm bipolar but he is always commenting on my changing moods and he fact that one minute i'm up and one minute I am so down he starts hiding medication and sharp things!.

I have taken self-assessment tests on various sites and the scores have come back rather high (saying I am displaying bipolar tendancies)!.

Anyone out there who knows a little more about this, or who has expereinced it - can you please give me you opinions or advice!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would look into bipolar 2!. Which it sound like to me!. Hypo mania and Depression!. Hypo mania is fun for people and they have more energy and are more creative, talkative, and it does last around 4 days to a week!. It is hard to determine hypo mania on your own!. I would research it more online and See a doctor where they would be able to deter main what you have!. Please note that if you have Bipolar 2 and are just taking an antidepressant that could be the reason it is not working all the time!. An antidepressant can cause you to go through more cycles or even take you from Bipolar 2 to a mixed state or worse full blown mania!. It may not be right away either!. You could just get more cycles then maybe a few years later of only taking an antidepressants you get pushed into full mania and do something you regret!. If Online test indicate bipolar tendencies it is definitely a concern!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

You describe a lot of the attributes of Bipolar disorder but you cannot get an accurate diagnosis here!.

I suggest you make an appointment to discuss this with your GP, CPN or specialist medical practitioner!.

The ONLY person who can diagnose and treat this is a psychiatrist!. Make an appointment with one your doctor recommends!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

You would need to see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis, but if the "switches" seem to last for a longer period of time, it could easily be bipolar!. If they can change in just a day or less and they're very quick mood swings, look into borderline personality disorder!. I behave the same way that you do, but it changes pretty much multiple times during just a day!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No one on this site can tell you but if you have concerns then it is best to talk things over with your mental health team!. Although we cannot tell you if you are or not, i thought i would tell you about my situation!. I was assessed for bipolar and had all the classic symptoms like you but the reason why they did not class it as bipolar is because like you i could function properly at work while on a high!. I had the highs and lows although my lows did affect my working life but when i was 'high' i coped very well at work and could go about the day without having any problems!. When you are bipolar and in a high mood you would not be able to concentrate at work you would experience too many racing thoughts etc and the staff would be able to tell a difference!. Also you are able to function when you had a low day which if you were bipolar you would not be able to do!. I had a low moments and ran away from work, which worried the hell out of everyone!. Like i said i was classed as not having bipolar but if you do have concerns then get it checked out!. Good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com
