Can a stroke bring on dementia?!

Question: Can a stroke bring on dementia!?
Back in June of this year my grandmother had a stroke!. Right after she had the stroke she seemed her normal self with the exception that she didn't know she was slouched over!. After that, she got progressively worse; imagining things, seeing things that aren't there, irritability, thinking she's somewhere other than where she really is, screaming for help!.!.!.etc!.!.!.It's been 4 months and she's still not back to normal!. She still screams for help ("help me!! help me!!" even though nothing is wrong), she's REALLY irritable--to the point that my mom will try to tell her something and my Gram will start mouthing cuss words (which is NOT her normal self)!. She'll be laying in her bed with her eyes closed and just start screaming!. My mom will tell her to open her eyes and my Gram replies "they are open damn it!!" (which she only opened them because my mom told her to)!. And I feel so bad for her because everyone in the nursing home hates her because all she does is lay in her bed and scream "help me!!" (She's bed-ridden as she had her leg amputated due to diabetes last year)!.

My question is, is this normal for stoke victims!? Since she is, for lack of a better word, "whacky"; will she ever go back to normal!? How long can recovery take!? Also, could a stroke cause dementia or some other mind troubles!?

Thank you very much in advance for the answers!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I saw your question and wasn't sure if I had the right answer so I did a little research!. This article explains it well:

I was curious about this b/c my grandfather died of a stroke (a year and a half ago)!. He had the big one, was put in a nursing home & had a few more small ones, and then 3-4 years later died from another one!. His mom died of one at age 42 and I have a clotting disorder that puts me at very high risk for them!. Naturally, I was curious about your question!.

I can tell you that my grandfather changed tremendously!. He never got mean or rude but he was a different person!. (I suppose it just depends on which part of the brain is effected!.) He used to call people "mama" (as in my grandmother- his wife) when she had been deceased for 12 years!. Anytime someone brought her up in a conversation, talked about a baby, etc, he would start bawling!. I remember that he cried a lot, he was very emotional (but never was before the stroke)!.

Good luck w/ your answers and I hope things improve!. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
