Is it possible to have done great in school, but still have ADHD?!

Question: Is it possible to have done great in school, but still have ADHD!?
My Sister is 39 years old and has never been diagnosed with any psychiatric problems!.

When she was a kid, growing up, she was a straight "A" student, all the way to High School, but, she was ALWAYS a disciplinary problem!. She was actually expelled from one school in the fourth grade for behavioral problems (even though in the year prior, they wanted to double-promote her) and she spent MOST of her High School years in the dean's office or in detention, yet graduated with high honors!. She now has a husband and two kids and seems to be functioning O!.K!., except that she can NEVER sit still, she runs around the house like a tornado (yet never seems to finish anything) and she drives us crazy with her lack of time management!. She's always late and doesn't seem to grasp the concept of time, and she never has!. She has had EXCELLENT jobs in the past, but would eventually be fired for coming in late or not meeting deadlines because of her lack of concept of time!. Her children show no signs of any of this, except that she's always making THEM late for things now and she seems to get irritated quite easily!. She's just all-around "high-strung"!.

Our parents were poor and although they kept us healthy, they could not afford psychologists or psychiatrists and just chalked her up to being a brat!.

My question is, is it possible for someone with ADHD to be smart and do as well in school academically as my sister has!? Also, she will not go to a psychiatrist, but I have convinced her to at least speak with her family doctor about it, but does a family doctor have the ability to write her a prescription for ADHD medicine!? I've seen other adults begin the medicine regimen and it changed their lives for the better!.
Thank you :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, it is absolutely possible!. AD/HD in no way effects intelligence!.
It's good that you've gotten her to see the family doctor, and yes, he can prescribe medication, however, that's not a very good idea!. Have her ask the family doctor for a referral to someone who can do a complete evaluation to see if she has it (it sounds like she may, but it could be something else, like ODD)!. Most M!.D!.s don't have the knowledge, or the experience to give your sister the help she needs!. For that matter, there are a lot of psychiatrists who will prescribe, without the adequate follow-up and guidance to find the right medication, dose, and frequency of taking it!. That aside, someone with a Ph!.D is best equipped to help your sister!.
Good luck to her, you, and your whole family!

it is possible, i did and i had ADHD! i went to do A levelWww@Answer-Health@Com

Of course they can be brilliant and have ADHD!. ADHD does not affect the IQ honey!

I'd just let her talk to her doctor about it and see what he says!. He may refer her to a specialist and hopefully she will listen!.

I know you care about her but she is an adult now honey and you've gotta let her make her own decisions alone!. That's very hard, trust me!. I dated someone who was bipolar and refused to take meds and there was nothing I could do but encourage positive behavior and let him make those decisions alone!.

Yes it is absolutely possible because ADHD is not a learning disorder!.
People who have ADHD or ADD!.!.!.!.!.!.!.their brains just work differently, although it may be difficult for them to concentrate!. It can also go the other way and they can zone everything out except for what they want to focus on!. But if your parents always had good structure and routine in the home, and encouraged good study habits, then that would have complimented the structure at school to help your sister do well!.

I have 2 kids with ADD, a fiance, a mother in law, and a brother!. And they are all doing well in school, or for the adults, they did well while they were there!.

And yes a family doctor can prescribe the medication!. My family doctor prescribes Adderall for my daughter, she is 11!. And used to prescribe it for my older son, he is 15!. He has learned to get along without the medication!. In some cases that aren't as severe teaching the kids how to be structured can help them to be able to get off the medicine!. For my kids they just seem like they need(ed) just a little help focusing!. And the rest is up to the parents to guide them!. I am a firm believer that the medicine is only a small part of what is needed to manage ADHD or ADD!. The doctors will tell you that too!. But I know some people do truly need it for thier whole life, along with the structure, routine, and organizational skills!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

In short, yes!.!.!.it is entirely possible that she has ADHD, but why should you be so involved in her life, seriously, its none of your business, take a step back, let her run her own life and just chill out, your constant interferance here is going to do nothing but push her away!. People are different, some people are strange, accept her for who she is, she doesn't need doctors or medication, she needs a close, loving family who don't judge her!.

Yes it is I have a brother who wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until his children were about 15 years ago and he graduated Harvard and got his graduate Degree at Rutgers!. He was always having to do some thing and it took him a while to concentrate on what he was supposed to be doing!. I would suggest that you and your sister see a nureopsychologist or nureopsychiatirst some one who deals with Learning disabilites!. They would be able to give you a definitive diagnosis and to help formulate a plan to help her and the children!. It might mean taking medication to help control the situation!. It's not uncommon for these things to run in families so having the kids evaluated might help them also!. It might also explain why the husband spends so much time away from home he might not know how to deal with the situation!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
