Question: Is there any other treatments for depression apart from anti-depressants!?
For someone who basically clinically depressed, and faces a lifetime being on and off tablets!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I went to an ECT consultation!. The Dr recommended Cognitive therapy (which I notice others have mentioned) It helped me a lot!.
Also, I was actually misdiagnosed and didn't have depression!. i have Bi polar 2!. I have looked for a site to show you but I couldn't find a suitable one!. Bi polar 2 is a lot milder that bi polar!. I didn't even know I had a hypomanic episode til I realized I was exceptionally happy, chatty and energetic on vacation 2 yrs ago!. Most of the time I felt depressed!. Anti-depressants will not work with bi polar, only mood stabilizers!. It is definitely worth a look!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, there are other things that can help your depression other than anti-depressants!. They are not designed to cure all your problems but to lift your mood enough for you to do the rest of the work needed for you to feel better!.

If you arent currently recieving some kind of talking therapy then I would suggest you go to your GP and ask to be referred to one like counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy!. This can help you work on the way you think, identify negative thought patterns and stop yourself spiralling into them!. Waiting lists can be long for cbt though!. Your GP should also be able to give you a list of recommended self-help books!. There are a lot of them out there that claim to be able to cure depression but have little evidence behind them!.

There are various other things you can do to help you keep on top of your exercise like eating healthily and excercising if you can!. See if there are any support groups for people with mental health problems in your area!. Being abe to spend time with people who understand can be a big help!. Lots of people find meditation very helpful in calming their mind!.

Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

ECT is pretty much a last option!. It is a surgical procedure, requires general anaesthetic and is used if anti depressants do not work!. ECT works by using electricity to change parts of the brain, and causes a seizure to try and "reset" a section of the brain, in much the same way a defibrillator resets a heart in fibrillation!.

There are natural remedies such as St Johns Wort that are good for depression!. Just check with your doctor that this is not going to interact with other medications!. Exercise is also great, along with drinking tea!.

Before we go too far, lets determine the difference between chronic (clinical) depression, and acute depression (known as the blues)!.

Clinical depression is a long term illness caused by imbalance of serotonin in the brain!. The modern antidepressants, such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) work on this by interfering with the reuptake process of serotonin!. This slows down the degradation and reuptake of the serotonin leaving more available in the brain!. Serotonin is the feel good hormone!. Clinical Depression is long term!.

Acute Depression (the blues) is caused by a multitude of factors, and can be stress, having a bad day, financial strain, etc!. This is short term and generally resolves itself once the source is resolved!.

There is a new treatment here in Australia that is being used in the US that is showing promise for patients with clinically diagnosed depression is Deep Magnetic Resonance Therapy, that uses magnetic waves in much the same way as ECT, but it is a lot safer and does not require a general anasthetic!.

Speak to your specialist about other options if you feel that medications are not a good option!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If they are severely depressed then sadly, meds are their best way!. Someone mildly depressed can learn new thinking techniques and try to establish more positive thoughts, counting ones blessings each day, smiling at things my kids say, capturing the sunlight and seeing nature up close in the country , a small walk each day even if the weather is dull gives a boost to seratonin levels even in miserable auld Glasgow!. Happy movies, good times ,going bowling or a fun day out, and reading amusing books!. Painting ,even as it needs a relaxed mind to be able to do artwork!.

There are many ways to lift a mild case of the blues!. To relieve really bad lifelong depression is to uncover the reason you have it , if it is a chronic ailment it can be relived but never cured I think and a Dr would have to advise that person further than a novice such as myself!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ask yourself: "Why do I feel depressed, and when did I first start to feel this way: can I associate this with any recent change in my life!?" (if so, it is probably situational depression: counselling, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is indicated)!. Or, was it a more gradual thing, with no apparent cause!? (nutritional deficiencies, hypothyroidism, environmental toxicity, or reactions to some medications, etc!., becomes more likely as the cause)!.
Antidepressants work quicker than the following; 2 - 6 weeks, but you may have to adjust dosage, or types, whereas St!. John's wort is effective for most people, tolerance doesn't develop, and the few side effects don't occur often, and even then are normally not severe!.

It doesn't cause sleeping problems, or weight change, but usually takes at least 2, and generally 4 - 6 weeks to become effective, but can work quicker than antidepressants, sometimes!. A recent, independent German double blind study showed it to be as effective as Sertraline (marketed in the USA as Zoloft: a commonly prescribed antidepressant) in cases of major depression, with far fewer side effects, and those were generally better tolerated, with a lower rate of discontinuation!. Unlike antidepressants, where sexual dysfunction is a common side effect, it happens much more rarely with St!. John's wort (I have noticed no effect in this area)!.

Remember back to a time when life was full of promise, or a day when you felt particularly good, or possibly excited from a good result!. Emotional states are associated with memories, and if it isn't major depression, this method can help!. A multidimensional approach to treating depression without medication follows!. All except for no!. (7!.) are safe to use with medication, but not St!. John's wort, because of interactions, and it's sensible to check out anything else first with your doctor!.

(1!.) Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice!. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it!. Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression!. Around 30% - 40% of depressed people have low vitamin B12 levels!. Depressed females using the contraceptive pill may benefit from vitamin B6 supplements!. ~~~ (2!.) Work up slowly to at least 20 minutes minutes of exercise, daily, or 30 - 60 mns, 5 times weekly!. Too much exercise can cause stress, which isn't wanted when dealing with depression!. ~~~ (3!.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain)!.

(4!.) Use daily, a relaxation method* and/or yoga*, and/or Tai Chi!. ~~~ (5!.) Initially, at least, some form of counselling, preferably either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy!. ~~~ (6!.) Maintain a mood chart, and daily activities schedule!. ~~~ (7!.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St!. John's wort, (get a German variety, if possible; local ones may vary in effectiveness) or supplements, such as SAMe, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55)!.

If 5HTP is used to boost serotonin levels, (which are low in depressed people) it is best taken with a high carbohydrate, minimal protein meal, like pasta, with tomato & basil, and avoid protein for 90 minutes, before, and after, to maximise the amount crossing the blood/brain barrier!. Also, 80% of people in the Western world have low magnesium levels, and these are known to cause depression & anxiety!. Try the magnesium supplement types shown in http://www!.real-depression-help!.com/ Some of these will be available in pharmacies, or supermarkets!. Low levels of calcium, and potassium can also cause depression!. Have your blood tested, and correct any deficiencies, preferably through improved nutrition!.

An improvement can be noticed in as little as a week, if a deficiency is the cause!. Also, iodised salt is much preferable to regular salt (one of the treatments in books on depression is iodine drops)!. Try to imagine, as vividly as possible, a time in the not too distant future, when you have overcome this temporary setback, and things are much better!. *View section 2, on the first 3 pages, and also pages R, C, I, and section 11, at http://www!.ezy-build!.net!.nz/~shaneris ECT has a 1 in 50,000 death rate and can cause permanent partial memory loss!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it depends on the type of depression!. I suffered terribly with post natal depression after having my children!. I was prescribed citalopram which did help relieve the feelings of depression, but I also found that gentle exercise and making myself get up and go out of the house even if it was for half an hour really helped turn me around!. CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) is also a good way of dealing with the depressive thoughts that can overwhelm you - helps you look at things in a different way and help you put a positive light on your life!.
