Could I become a psychologist?!

Question: Could I become a psychologist!?
When I am older I would like to be some sort of psychologist because I really love to help people and it's what I would like to do!. The only thing is I am suffering from anorexia (have been for a while) and i'm wondering will I be actually allowed to become a psychologist!? (If you disagree with my condition please do not comment meanly!. I am not looking for a cure, unless I became accidentally pregnant (as my boyfriend and I are not trying lol) in which case I would eat as best as I could for the baby!. What do you all think about my career!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi, i was anorexic when i was 16 which i did overcome and now at 25 i am being seen by mental health nurses, therapist etc for personal problems and now after i have overcome all of my problems i would also like to train to be in that job!. I told one of my nurses about this and she said that i was in the best position to do this job as we can personally relate to people who are suffering!. The only advice i can suggest is you need to treat your anorexia and do well at school!. I know how difficult and controlling anorexia is but you can overcome it and now your have more of a reason as you are doing it for a better future! Good luck with everything and if you ever want to talk then feel free to email me xWww@Answer-Health@Com

There are many degrees that can lead to therapy with patients, including psychiatrist (MD from med school plus residency), clinical psychologist (Ph!.D), counselor, social worker, and I'm sure there are others!. If you want a good description of options, take a look at the book, "Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology, which has a few pages in the introduction which list options for becoming a treatment provider!. You can also become a lawyer who advocates for mental health issues, start your own business/nonprofit to help those with eating disorders, etc!. Admittedly, training programs can be reluctant to admit people who are "trying to solve their own problems," but as long as you know what you are getting into (e!.g!., the science requirements where a lot of training is not directly with helping people), I'd support your interest!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Having a history of mental health problems will not stand in your way - but you really need to resolve your own issues before you embark upon helping others!. Many people who have successfully resolved their mental health problems are drawn towards helping others, but amongst them are those who are still vulnerable and when they engage with their clients, they are unable to separate their own unresolved issues from their client's issues!. An ambition such as yours can be a good motivating factor is resolving your anorexia, but don't carry the problem along with you or you will do more harm than good!.

It concerns me that you identify having a baby as a solution to your anorexia!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Of course you could become a psychologist!. There isn't any rule that says that psychologists have to be super human and not have any kind of problem in their life!. If anything you can relate more more to girls with eating disorders and that would make you a better psychologist!. There is a medical doctor named Kay Redfield Jameson who is bipolar and she is a psychiatrist and a famous author!. All you need to do to become a psychologist is to do a bachellors, and then a masters in psychology, and then get a Ph!.D in psychology!. You can be anything you want to be!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Theoretically, a person with a mental health condition could become a psychologist!.

But you say you're 'not looking for a cure', and I think that might put you in an awkward position!. What if you have a patient who's anorexic!? How can you help them if you won't help yourself!? Won't you feel like a hypocrite advising them to try to recover, when you refuse to!?

If you got help, at least TRIED to overcome your condition, then becoming a psychologist would be fine!. But if you insist on staying ill then I don't know how you can help other ill people!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

YES OF COURSE U CAN!!
I also would love to become something such as a psychologist, and I've been sectioned under the mental health act after which I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder!.
I'd never really thought of working in the mental health area before but after I had a key worker of my own I realised that I'd love to help ppl in similar situations to myself!
I'm currently studying an access course to go to university next year to study either psychology or social work,
Good luck with everything and remember your experience will give u an empathy with people which other ppl may not have!

Hi! First of all it doesnt matter if you are anorexic or bulimic you can become psychologist if you want!. I had that dream when i was your age and trust me i have changed my mind!. Maybe its only me!. I love helping people, working for charities, or on suicide line, talking listening!. Psychology is not as easy as you or we might think!. It is a lot to deal with!. You have to be sure that this is what you want!. Give yourself time, few years to think about it!.As a job its could be very stressfull!. But if you want to help people now, you can do it in different ways as i said above, so you will have a feeling what its like!. I am the same i love helping people and believe me if i could i would change this world for the best!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

As long as you get help for the problems that you are having I see no reason why you could be a psychologist!? I have a therapist that is bi-polar and I think it helps her to better understand what I am going through!. So go to a doctor and get some help for your problems and one day you will be able to use your experience to help others!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi there,

If you really want to help people, there are plenty of careers that will help you fulfill that purpose!

I suggest you spend time really looking at different options and find out which areas truly help people improve conditions in their lives!.

It is my personal experience that psychology is very limited in really helping someone "to stand on their own two feet" and feel great about themselves and their ability to live life!.

This world needs people like you who want to assist their fellow man!.!.!. I hope you find something that will help you work along your purpose line!

Cheers,
