Your doctor must have had a reason for choosing valium, rather than other meds for anxiety and sleep!. Valium is seldom prescribed anymore for several reasons!. The first is that it has a very long half-life, meaning that it stays in the body a very long time!. It can be easily abused and one can become addicted to it!.

Valium's half life is 20-100 hours depending on the person!. Let's take an average half life of 60 hours!. This means that in 60 hours, half of the valium will be out of your body!. After that, it continues to trickle out, and its effects get smaller and smaller!. However, it stays in your body at small dosage as long as 400 hours (for a half life of 60 hours)!.

I take klonopin, which is very similar to valium but has a half life of 18-50 hours!. I have tried many times to get off klonopin without success!. It requires tapering off very slowly over the course of probably 1-2 months, depending on your dosage!.

If the dosage of valium is small and you don't take it very long (less than 4-6 months), you should be ok!. However, most doctors avoid valium and prescribe similar types of meds (called benzodiazepines) that have much shorter half lifes!. Ativan and xanax are very popular!. Ativan has a half life of 10-20 hours and xanax is 6-12 hours!. If you are just taking this med for sleep, ask your doctor about restoril, sonata and ambien, which have the fastest half lifes!.

I ain't a doctor, but I just speak from experience as a psychiatric patient!. To repeat, if the valium dose is small and you don't take it very long, you should probably be ok!. If you decide to stop taking the valium, you MUST taper off slowly!. Ask you doctor for suggestions on stopping valium!. I wish you well!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you use it responsibly it is not dangerous!. If you take it everyday you will become physically addicted to it, and if you try to stop cold turkey you can have very serious side effects such as seizures and sometimes death!. If you want to stop you have to work with the doctor and slowly ween yourself off the drug!. You can also get into trouble if you like the high Valium gives you and you start to take more than you are supposed to!. But like I said, if you take it the way your doctor tells you to take it you will be fine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Valium is antidepressant, it can lower you blood pressure beyond recovery!. So don't take it unless it is prescribed by your doctor!. If you have a hard time sleeping and it becomes chronic you might need medical help!. There are sleep doctors that can address your situation!. Valium can be habit forming, and can cause accidents specially when driving or operating machinery!. It also have an after effect which would sometimes let you have headaches, feel sluggish and tired!.

Try non habit forming first like Melatonin, or even a warm bath to help you relax!. You can also meditate!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Valium, relaxes the muscles and I can only believe that is why the med was RX for you!. To relax you to and allow you to sleep!. Valium, like ALL medication can be dangerous IF misused!. Never take valium and drink!. AND never share with friends!.!.!.!. I have a friend who is a quadrapelgic, who has been on valium for 25 years!.!. You can become immuned to any medication if you take it a long time!.!. That is where the problem will begin, than you take more than you should!.!.!. Try counting blessing to put you to sleep!. Now, I lay me down to sleep and am grateful for my eyes that let me see, my legs that let me walk, my arms with hands attached that let me type and a brain that lets me think and the blessing go on and on, if you have family and friends!.Good luck and do well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't think its a good idea to take these drugs--especially over a long period of time!. I wouldn't consider them dangerous though--unless you take too much or combine it wilh alcohol!.

A good non-drug approach for insomnia is found in this website: MentalHealthSolutions!.Info Check under the Other Issues tab!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Used according to the Doctor's directions for dosage and frequency, it shouldn't cause any problems other than those general ones about not driving or operating machinery, etc!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
