Answers:
I work in the mental health field and wish I had done it by going the nursing route!. It is difficult but you deal less with medical emergencies than medical maintenance!. (this would be my preference, since the ER part of nursing freaks me out)!. You get decent rates of pay!. There is a lot of over seeing other staff members!. Attending team meetings, and working with everyone from the justice system, to social services, to the psych and medical staff!. Every day will be an adventure!. Oh yes and understanding medicaid is essetial, since most people with severe mental health issues are on it!.
I strongly suggest getting some cross training in mental health diagnosis as well as some sociological understanding of the origin of such diagnosis!. *<--I suggest this since my experience with Psych nurses is that they do not do well with seeing "the whole picture"!. As the social worker I need people to focus on every aspect of functioning and saftey, in and out of a hospital setting!. Balancing what is medically best and what will actually work can be difficult, for all involved!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's tough!. You have to be able to reach patients, establish a connection with them but still be able to put it all behind when you leave work, i mean you can't let it affect you!.
Working with mentally-ill patients it's difficult, but rewarding, if you have a warm heart and a cold mind, you should do just fine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
