Why arn't there more mental hospitals then prisons?!

Question: Why arn't there more mental hospitals then prisons!?
Most people who commit horrific crimes were abused as children and have psychological issues as a result or had some childhood trauma!. Instead of locking them in cages and eventually letting them back out!. Why don't they open up mental institution that could possibly help these mentally ill people!?

And I know that everyone who was abused as a child doesn't turn out to be crazy, but if there is a bolder in the middle of the street some people turn left, some people turn right, some people will hit the brakes, some people will jump out of the car, and some people will keep going!. Not everyone reacts to the same situation in the same matter!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Ronald Reagan introduced tax reforms that eliminated subsidies that states used for running mental hospitals, so many were closed and the people turned out to fend for themselves!. That's the reason!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

http://www!.pbs!.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/!.!.!.

There is a special that PBS did on prisons!. I think basically, the government does not provide enough money for these people to have the care they need!. Also, they come into these prisons for crimes they committed, but then are soon diagnosed with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia!. Eventually, they are given the help they need, but a prison can only do so much for them!. They are released with the medication they need for a couple of days, but nobody follows up on them and then they fall into this vicious cycle of being arrested, and then being released!. The video explains more in detail and has more reasons as to why this happens!. It's really unfortunate!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The reason that are more prisons than mental hospitals is because more people commit crimes than there are people with a mental illness so bad that they need long-term care!. About 1% of the population is schizophrenic and schizophrenia makes up more than half or even two-thirds of the mentally ill in mental hospitals!. Of those only another segment needs long-term institutionalization!. However, crime occurs much more frequently so there are more criminals than there are mentally ill people so sick they need the hospital!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I always thought about that, it should be more of education not like schools counting 1 2 3 a b c but the ways of life in society!. There are bad and good times but must learn the circle of life!. Its good to study more than 1 religion, i mean it gives you a deeper thinking about life around u
This is what they should do to prisoners instead of making them worse, locked up in the cage!.!.!.
The way I think of these people in control is, they want more crimes and criminals!.!.!. what are they up to!?!?!?!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

you sound idealistic which means you should aim to have a career in helping people!.

People are deemed insane if their crime isn't premeditated and they didn't try to cover it up!.
In essence, if you know right from wrong you are not legally insane!.
Obviously there is something really wrong with these sociopaths' brains but they chose to do evil when they knew it was wrong!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I really don't have an answer for you but, we need more people that think like you in this world!. I agree most of the people in prisons should be in hospitals!. If there was more love and helpers in the world, It would be a better place!. :-)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Good question!. Do we treat the disease/illness or punish the person for having it!. Or are we just punishing the person for crime committed w/no thought to mental health!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not every person who murders was abused as a child, where do you get your facts!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

The answer is simple!. Anyone who commits a crime could be labeled a psychopath rather than a criminal!. Does a person who is mentally ill -deserve to be excused from personal responsibility for their actions!? No! Now the issue of prisons is a whole different story!. The prisons today are more like luxury resorts!. Your spouse or the state cares for your children, you get leisure time, regular meals, cable television, movies, church and even the opportunity to take college courses all for free, free health and dental assistance and more!. WOW - maybe I should do a crime so I can get all of these benefits! I would guarantee that almost every criminal could be diagnosed with a mental disorder of some kind!. But that does not excuse their actions and give them the right to take taxpayers money and increase our taxes to try to rehabilitate them for free!. Furthermore, most people do not know that illegal immigrants account for something like 1/3 of all jail inmates!. Should we accept the burden of the mentally ill people from all other countries and put that weight on the backs of taxpayers too!?Www@Answer-Health@Com
