Prozac (or other SSRI's) and Marijuana?!

Question: Prozac (or other SSRI's) and Marijuana!?
Hi everyone-

I have my first appointment with a psychiatrist tomorrow, and I am hoping to get some sort of medication!. I had been going to a psychologist for a while, but when I moved away to college I figured I'd get a new start, and maybe my depression would go away!.

Anyway, my real question is that I want to know if I can still smoke while taking antidepressants!.

Thanks Everyone, LeeWww@Answer-Health@Com

No, don't smoke if you're depressed (on medication or not) because marijuana can cause paranoia and that'll make you feel even worse!. Smoking reflects the mood you're in when you smoke!. Happy and out for a good time you get happier and chilled out!. Miserable, low or depressed and these feelings generally become worse when you smoke!.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this will happen to you, only that it could!. I had panic attacks as well as depression (I was on medication)and dope worked for me, it didn't get rid of the depression but being depressed didn't depress me anymore!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Basically!. No!. You can't!.

You shouldn't be smoking marijuana to begin with when you have a mental illness!. However, that aside, combining it with an antidepressant, any of them really, drastically lowers their efficacy to the point where they do essentially nothing beneficial!. All sorts of strange anecdotal stories about panic and odd reactions, but those don't stand up well!. The interference is quite well documented in the addiction field, and one of the more common reasons why antidepressants fall on their face!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am one of those people who is "live and let live!." I don't make a habit of telling anyone not to smoke pot or whatever someone feels like doing, as long as they aren't hurting anyone else!. I wanted to stress that before I told you this: I smoked pot while on an SSRI, and my life has not been the same since!. I had a horrible dysphoric reaction and now have panic disorder to the extent that it's difficult to leave the house!. Again, I'm not here to tell anyone how to live!. I'm just sharing with you that every day I have to fight off involuntary feelings of "going crazy" and I'm losing my relationships because of it!. If you want more information, you can message me!. I seriously hope you'll do some reading and think hard before you mix the two!. People can have mental illnesses that lie dormant until pot and SSRIs bring them out!. Look up depersonalization disorder; it's no fun!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

hmmm!. i dont know, it could offset the chemicals!. my BEST advice is not to even try!. with antidepressants and marijuana mixed!.!.!.i REALLY dont think you should even try it!. im serious!. u could always ask someone who has taken em together!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I used to have a boyfriend who did this!. Best thing I could remember from it is that it didnt really have any drug interactions, but what it did do was often doing one alot would make him want to stop doing the other, aka, smoking alot of pot made him not want to take his pills, and when he did start taking pills regularly, he would sometimes not want to smoke pot anymore!.

If you are thinking of asking the Dr!. for some meds, I would recommend asking for a pill called Wellbutrin!. I have taken a lot of meds and this was the only one that I felt really helped me without adding all sorts of bad side effects!. Prozac is not as great as everyone hypes it up to be!. It made me dizzy alot, and although it helped me not be depressed, people often said I sounded really testy, irritable, or mean!.

I hate to sound parental, but has it ever occurred to you that the pot may be contributing to your depression!? The reason I ask is, I used to smoke a bit, and I would start to notice it would take all of my bad negative thoughts and amplify them way out of proportion!. When I would be sober the next day after having a bad trip, I would realize that the pot was only making me feel worse, and that the positive side of smoking pot was really short lived compared to the negative!. Finally I quit smoking alltogether, and although I still do get down from time to time!. it is not nearly as severe as when I was smoking!. You may or may not have a similar reaction!. I was just sharing what I went through with it!. It's completely your choice if you want to smoke or not!.

Below I have linked a site with a list of common depression meds that may help you to know more about them when you go to see the shrink!. If you dont know anything about meds they will just give you the first pill they think of and send you out the door when your time is up!. I learned that by knowing more and asking questions about the side effects of different meds, that you can get a better one for you instead of just the same one that doctor gives everyone!. If you get a pill you dont like, TELL THE SHRINK!. A lot of people fail to do this, and just quit taking the meds without saying anything, which doesnt help!. They cant help you if you're not honest with them!.

There is also a link to a really cool site called erowid that has tons of really useful info about drugs (not the prescription kind)!. I have learned tons of stuff I didnt know by reading there!.

Good luck, I hope this helpsWww@Answer-Health@Com
