Answers:
Most people who are bipolar need to take some form of tranquilizer during the "up" or manic phase!. During this phase if they smoke marijuana instead, it would have the same tranquilizing effect -- so the effect would essentially be benign or helpful!. Except that any type of smoking can be somewhat harmful to the lungs!. Marijuana does not have the tars or nicotine that regular cigarettes do, so that would not be a problem, but any smoke is unhelpful to lung tissue!.

But during the "down" or depressive phase, marijuana would be decidedly unhelpful and would accentuate the depression!. So it should be avoided during that period!. Hallucinogens should be avoided during all phases!. Since most bipolar folks already are taking some medications, mixing in some other drugs can have all sorts of unusual effects!. Sometimes the two might cancel each other out, as you note!. But sometimes the opposite can happen -- there is a multiplying effect!. Instead of being like 1 + 1, it's more like suddenly there's 10 x 10! This can be incredibly dangerous, even fatal! I worked as a nurse for a number of years and I've seen people mix drugs in fatal ways before, even over-the-counter meds with prescription meds, things that you'd never expect would be harmful!. So if you're already taking medication for something that's serious -- like bipolar disorder -- don't take a hallucinogen! Those are really potent and you just never know for sure what could happen that would not happen to somebody else!. You're playing with fire! If you want a wild experience, go watch that old movie, "2001: A Space Odyssey" and fast-forward through that last part where the astronaut goes into the monolith -- FF and backwards and FF several times with the sound up at full volume! Have fun (and be safe)!Www@Answer-Health@Com

First off, I would not recommend anyone with Bipolar experimenting with drugs!. But, with that being said some illegal drugs have weird or unusual effects on people with Bipolar!. Bipolar people's brain chemistry is different!. Stimulants(for the depression) and depressants(for the mania) can be used to stabilize either the mania or depression!. Weed is a depressant so, is alcohol!. I have heard the cocaine can be used to treat the depression!. I can't believe i'm tell you this!. Carrie Fisher treated her bipolar with alcohol and illegal drugs for years!. Read her book "Post cards from the Edge" its all about this and the consequences!.

I will say it again!. DO NOT treat your Bipolar this way!. The risks of jail and overdose are too high!. The modern legal prescription drugs are much better and safer!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'd say that person is playing with fire!. In my experience it tends to make the likelyhood of instability much more likely --- what goes up has to come down !.!.!.!. and if you are bipolar the pendulum is much bigger than the average person!.

obviously there's the chance of jail and criminal record and ruined future,!.!.just to make it even more appealing!.!.!.jail is not pleasant!.!.!.

Cancer of the respiratory tract and lungs may also be promoted by marijuana smoke!.4 A study comparing 173 cancer patients and 176 healthy individuals produced strong evidence that smoking marijuana increases the likelihood of developing cancer of the head or neck, and that the more marijuana smoked, the greater the increase!.17 A statistical analysis of the data suggested that marijuana smoking doubled or tripled the risk of these cancers!.!.!.!.an d there's more !.!. read here

I don't know where you got your information!.

I worked in mental health since 1987 and I know of a lot of people with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia who also abuse drugs!. That's not true about "quieting the mind!." Mentally ill people with substance abuse are consided "dual-diagnosis" and are usually very challenging to treat!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
