Like many other illnesses, both physical and mental, depression can range from mild to severe!. (Mild depression is usually called dysthmia, but I think you get the point!.)

I suffer from major depression!. I have been hospitalized twice and spent decades on many different antidepressants!. So my case is closer to the severe end of the scale!. Still, I do know people whose depression is worse than mine!. (By the way, I started taking antidepressants because psychotherapy and alternative medicine were completely ineffective for me!.)

Yes, you're right!. Depression is an overused term, both on YA and in general!. However, there is an even more overused term that crops up a lot on YA---bipolar disorder!. Early in 2008, the New York Times featured a front page article on how many more people are being diagnosed as having bipolar disorder!. In my opinion, here the blame is on many doctors themselves!. Being bipolar is one of the latest "trendy" diagnoses!.

This happens with physical illnesses too!. In the 1960s and 70s, a very common disorder was hypoglycemia!. In the 1980s, we started hearing about chronic fatigue syndrome, then fibromyalgia!. Now we hear of chronic adrenal exhaustion!.

Sorry, if I am going off on a personal rant!. However, you're right when you say that the term "depression" or even "clinical depression" is being bandied around too much!.

I wonder you have ever been in depression before!. It is terrible and horrible to have one, be it a day is good enough!. When you in depression after being depressed for a few days because of certain sickness, problems or worries which you have no solution and the thought of it makes you worry over day and night, lack of sleep, cannot eat nor talk!. Depression makes you a confused person, cannot think or visualise, full of anxiety and chances of jumping out of the window in a high building or taking overdose of drugs is high!. You really did not have a logical mind and committing suicide is the solution unless a close one is there to support you!. One main focus is God another is to see a doctor for the proper medication!. I got into depression because of kidney failure and after more than 10 years, having a family to support, medically unfit to go to work, body is bloated, nausea and sick, it causes me to worry until to the extreme point when depression comes in!. Getting out is a real impression impression left is still in mind!. Best is to keep an open mind and share like this or with your friends!. What are friends for!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I suffer from clinical depression, but am on medication for it so it's under control at the moment so I guess you can say I'm living a 'normal' life!.

But when I've been in the midst of a major depressive episode, I can hardly get out of bed or do anything simple without it being a big ordeal!. Sometimes I would just lie in bed rocking from side to keep myself sane!. I completely lost my appetite so had to force myself to eat!. In my mind it suddenly became reasonable to want to jump off a bridge or leap in front of a train!. I felt like I want to go to sleep and never wake up!. It's just horrific, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Occasionally I will get depressed, but, that's only before I'm about to start my period, and the depression doesn't happen every month!. But, I would have to agree with you, that word does get thrown around entirely too much (just like ADD, ADHD, and infant acid reflux)!.

And really, I wouldn't even call it depression for me, it's really just a surge of hormones that throw me off for a few days!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes--It is very overused!. So are those brain drugs the doctors like to give out like candy!.

*Yes I agree!.!.It bothers me that so many children are diagnosed as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. Real depression can kill people!.
I think it's mostly for attention!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
