I have children and I`m bipolar!.!.!.!.I`m moderately affected!. I don`t offended when people ask this question!. But there are sane folks that hurt their children,( my husband`s ex tied her son to a crib so she could go out to a club)!.!.!.!.!.!.!.she completely sane, just selfish!. Anyhow, medicated and properly treated, I don`t see why I can`t have children!? AND i was diagnosed after I had my last child!.!.!.I decided he was all I could handle because of my disease!.It depends on the person and their compliance with their meds and when they were diagnosed, some people go years being symptomatic, without being diagnosed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Ok the one MAJOR issue is who is to draw the line at what qualifiys as "severly mentally ill"!?!?!? Mentally ill DOES NOT mean retarted!. Mental illness can be OCD, Bipolar, Depression, Scitzofania, anziety and many other things!. And many people you might concider "severely mentally ill" fuction just fine because they accept the illness and treat it accordingly!. And there are plenty of people with no mental illnesses that are much worse parents then those that do!.
And really are you questioning whether they should because of abiliy to parent or that some mental illnesses have believed hereditary links!?
Bottom line, you cant say that any one person should not be ALLOWED to have kids for any reason because then who is to draw the line on other things too!. Should alcoholics, drug addicts, smokers, anyone with heart diesease, epilepsy, cancer!?
Yes some people that have illnesses that would cause them to be unable to be a good parent should make the choise to not have children, or people close to them that recognise the situation should advise them to maybe not!. but no one has the right to say that they should not be allowed to!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

"Severely" mentally ill, of course not!. I have never seen anyone severely mentally ill that could independently even take care of themselves, let alone a child!. Most often in such cases families have these young people sterilized, to avoid any risk!. And we are talking about the severely handicapped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
this is a moral issue that has floated around for years!. Technically they are allowed to have children!. Now my opinion I most definitely say NO!. 99% of all neurological defects resulting in mental retardation are carried through the genes!. So having a child to parents who are mentally retarded almost guarantees having children with the same if not worse conditions the parents have!. Depends on the nature of the illness!. If it is debilitating then no!. If they retain normal functions important to the kid's well being, then yes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
