i have bipolar II ultradian rapid cycling and have been on lithium for 12 years now!. it has been a life savor for me!. i went to see a new dr!. once and he took me off of it and 2 wks later i tried to commit suicide!. went back to my old dr!. she put me right back on lithium and the suicidal thoughts diminished!. it doesn't keep in in a zombie state like one person had stated, i take it right before i go to bed!. my family could tell a BIG difference in my moods, actions and personality in the time frame when i wasn't on my lithium!. i am 37 yrs old!. i will most likely be on lithium for the rest of my life, and hey, that's fine by me!. it saves my life each night i take it!.
there are people that are going to trash talk lithium, when there are some of us out there that it helps save our lives!. lithium isn't for everyone, just like everyone doesn't like cough medicine!. lithium can't be tolerated by some people, then there is someone like myself that can handle it with ease and no side effects!.
granted i am on a wide range of other meds as well, that help with the lithium!. i am on seroquel, vistaril, abilify, levothyroxin, topamax, klonopin and inderal!. (as well as lithium) this cocktail has worked well for me for over 2 yrs!.

EDIT ~ FYI ~ for one, my Topamax is for my Epilepsy (Gran Mal Suizures) not mental illness and second my Levothyroxin is for my Hypothyroidism again not a mental illness!. They are not "get high drugs" as you speak, they are save my life medications!.

I was on lithium for a short time, but never helped any!.!.!.!.i got bad headaches on it and had to constantly be drinking water or got so thirsty!. However, many people do have a lot of success on it and dont have bad side effects!. Im on depakote now, and it is notorius for bad side effects, but mine are mostly mild and it levels me out a lot!. Every person is different and you have to find the meds that work right for you!.
No meds should be making you a zombie!. If they do, discuss it with your Dr as it is the wrong drug for you!. Meds for bipolar should just be leveling out what is wrong in your brain so you can function normally!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was put on lithium while I was in the hospital for my Bipolar Disorder!.!.!.it worked wonders, it really did!.
I've been on many medications, but lithium helped the most!. The only problem was that it kind of killed my creativity, and as an artist, that didn't really work for me!.
As far as the disorder goes, though, lithium helped so much!. It really stabilized me and made me feel normal!. Everyone said I was easier to be around and to talk to!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've been on it three days and it definitely makes you thirsty!. I've also had slight nausea and diarrhea and a very slight tremor but nothing serious!. I'm intrigued to see if it works!. It's supposed to be the gold standard for Bipolar treatment so you might as well give it a go!?Www@Answer-Health@Com
My older sister is bipolar and taking lithium!. She is a zombie!. Half the time you have to repeat yourself to her!. She has 6 kids and a husband she's not bipolar she just tired! I would check to see if there's classes or some natural way of dealing with bipolar! Hope everything works out!Www@Answer-Health@Com
