Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc!.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc!.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level!.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication!. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac!. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings!. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac!. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc!.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced!.!.!. you have that "learned behavior" in your mind!. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this!. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction!.!.!. There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to!.!.!.!.

I came here tonight because I have no one to talk to and I am having panic attacks too!. So I might as well help a fellow sufferer!.

Everyone has a different sensation that characterizes their panic attack!. For me it is not a throat closing sensation but that is very, very common, i have heard!. I have also suffered from P!.A!.s since age 11 or 13 and now I'm 43!.

In my case I just feel like someone shocked me or startled me right after I drift off, or lately I'm so exhausted that I sleep about one hour and then the same thing happens!. Then I'm flooded with negative uneasiness and thoughts that don't even make any sense but are just a bunch of dark scariness!. Sort of like that feeling in the middle of the night when you wake up knowing you're sick and about to throw up!. It's almost identical to that, to me - vague but strong fear, dread, and creepy feelings that are hard to shake and can snowball into feeling physically sick and tense!. One trick I use is to get into a hot bathtub even in the middle of the night!. It forces your muscles to relax!. Another trick is to breathe in, hold it for a count of your choosing like 8, then breathe out and hold that for 8 also!. Repeat, even though you'll feel like gasping for breath!. The slowing-down will correct some imbalance in your blood chemistry and take some of the power out of the panic attack!. I wish you the best of luck - only those of us who suffer from this know how hellish it is!. I hope I have helped but I'm not sure if you had an exact question!. I'm sure the throat-closing is just your body's best way of expressing total fear and telling you that a fight-or-flight state has been triggered!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I can be prone to panic attacks but I must say that just before falling to sleep has never been a problem and this causes me to wonder a few other things!.
#1) Do you suffer attacks at other times of day, especially when faced with a stressful situation!?
#2) Have you ever been prescribed xanax or similar and did it work!?
#3) Not to be superpersonal but do you happen to be overweight!? I almost suspect that if you are, you may actually be experiencing some of the beginning stages of sleep apnea and as your body relaxes and breathin begins to regulate your prone position allows the collapse of your throat area which in turn can restrict your breathing a bit and can somewhat feel like an attach when if act it is just your body falling asleep and trying to get some oxygen!.

Like I said I am not really familiar with all the info I need but would be interested to know if I have mentioned anything that convinces you that the problem could not be anxiety related although struggling to breathe does tend to make a person feel anxious!.

If all fails ask your doc for xanax but consider the questions asked!.

Have a great night!.
