To differentiate it from other diagnoses such as dysthymia!. Dysthymia is a clinical diagnosis, so is technically a clinical depression, but it is chronic and mild, compared to major depression which is acute and severe!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, there are different types of depression, and I'm guessing that the APA wants to differentiate major depression, which is the most serious form of depression, from, say, dysthymia, which is a chronic, mild to moderate type of depression!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They do have separate classes of depression!. The different classes have different symptoms as well!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
