When you're really desperate, anti-depressants can really help!. Sometimes it's the only way to deal with suicidal ideas!.
You have many kinds of anti-depressants that don't work the same way!. But generally speaking, depression comes from an imbalance in the brain's neurotransmitters and anti-depressants help balance these chemicals!. There are other factors like stress that can trigger a depression as well!.
Everybody is different and it's often very hard to find the "good" medication (many "try and misses")!. What works well for someone can be catastrophic for someone else!. It's the psychiatrist's role to find out what somebody needs (by the way, some psychologists and psychiatrists don't prescribe anti-depressants)!.
Anti-depressant alone aren't enough and speech therapy is often necessary!.
I believe that anti-depressants can't make you happy but it can be a helpful tool to feel more serene and be able to work on your problems!.

There are three main neuotransmitters involved in depression - serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine!. When you don't have enough of one or all, you get depressed!. Antidepressants lengthen the time beween neurons to allow for more serotonin etc to pass on!. In other words, they boost the amount of neurotransmitters back to healthy levels and thereby reduce or eliminate depression!. If you are on the wrong antidepressant for your problem, it won't work or not adequately!. Uh, change pills!. If you are in the bipolar spectrum, antidepessants aren't apt to work well!. Uh, work with a psychiatrist There are other reasons why they might not work, but those are not common, and I've gone on too long already!.

So, short answer - suicide or a pill!? Seems like an easy choice to me!.

Just one other question!. If you've never taken one, how do you know they don't work!? I know many who have benefited!. I've read enough research to know the number who have benefited is in the multi-millions!.

Oh, and so you know, I think most people with depression should go to therapy first!. Situational depression and personal issues do not require antidepressants!. They require working out your stuff!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Depression is caused by a lack of serotonin your brain!. Antidepressants create more serotonin in your brain!. It's a pretty straightforward solution to a problem that has horrible consequences!.

I've been treated for severe depression for thirty years, with suicidal ideation for twenty of those!. I am still here, so I am living proof that antidepressants do work because I've been on and off of them for all of those thirty years!. When I am on the right one (for me) at the right dose, I feel completely well!. Even have confidence again!. No thoughts at all of suicide!.

I'm not saying that antidepressants are magical, but they do work!. I would not be here otherwise!.

If you are thinking about suicide, you need, my sweet child, to see a doctor!. He can prescribe an antidepressant, which will create more serotonin in your brain, and you will then feel so much better!. The very first antidepressant might not be the exact right one for you; thankfully, there are tens of dozens of them out there!. You may have to struggle for a few more weeks until you get the right (for you) antidepressant at the right dose!. (Doctors generally want to start you on a low dose and then gradually increase the dose, if necessary!.)

Until you see a doctor, here are some things you can try to help get through the days:

1) remember you only have to make it through today, only today;

2) Rescue Remedy, sold at all Whole Foods and other health food stores!. Use every fifteen minutes until you get some relief!. It's OTC, no Rx needed;

3) Serotain!. Also over the counter!. I recommend the brand listed in the first URL below!. It contains the precursor to serotonin, and it really helps me;

4) exercise!. I know it's the last thing you want to do, but it does release endorphins, which can mitigate the depression temporarily;

5) meditation!. It helps me to listen to new-age music with no lyrics!. Don't do it if sitting alone trying to meditate makes you cry, though;

6) get out of the house!. One of the first psychiatrists I ever saw recommended this!. I have been shopping with a red nose (from crying) countless times!. I guess it's the additional stimulation that distracts you, but for some ridiculous reason, it does work!. I know you don't want to go out, but try to force yourself;

7) have your vitamin D levels checked at your doctor
