Why in school were we taught that schizophrenics have a split personality? ?!

I know that's a big misconception but I didn't know it was being taught too!. Thats sad!. You are correct!. Schizophrenia is not split personality!.

You should bring it up in class!.

Dumb uneducated teachers! Schizophrenia comes from the words schizo (split) phrenia (mind) which was thought to be the case in the dawn of psychiatry!. Now they know better but still do not know the cause (s) of schizophrenia!. Look up "schizophrenia" in a Yahoo! web search!. Wikipedia has a good summary!.

I learned that the word schizophrenia literally means split mind!. I think that confuses people!. I always make sure to correct people when they use it ((and any disorders)) in the wrong way!.
