Question: Depression and anhedonia please help!!!!?
My boyfriend is 21 going to school just like me and suffers from anhedonia and a serious case of clinical depression!. I am having so much trouble understanding it!. I have read about it and it is so hard for me to grasp this concept!. He is taking medication, lexapro and seeing a therapist, I was so happy he was willing to do that!. I feel like he is so distinct and can barely talk to me or anyone!. I just want to know how I can help him!. Should I give him his space or keep trying to help!. It seems like I am only making the situation worse!. How do I help someone who is severely depressed and who cannot feel anything!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, understanding is really difficult - it's like trying to understand how childbirth feels (or rape, etc!.,)!. Words don't do enough - you had to have been through it!. You sound like an intelligent and caring gf!. MDD (Major depressive disorder) is a very hard disease to live with (both the one with it and loved ones)!. Best thing you can do is just be there - let him know that you love him and support him!. For now, that's all you can do, and that's ok!. Depending on how long he's been on the lexapro, and the dosage level, it may take him a while to fully respond to the meds!. Encourage him to stay on the meds and stay in therapy!. Psych meds are NOT meds he can simply start/stop at a whim!. Don't tell him to hurry up and get better - that's impossible!. Don't expect him to respond to your trying to cheer him up - that's impossible too, until his brain chemicals are balanced in such a way as he finally is able to respond!. In the meantime, don't mess YOUR schooling up - stay on track for yourself!.
