Bipolar Disorder can present in many ways, but what you are describing is typical!.

Since your stepdaughter is 19, there's not much you can do other than encourage her to get some help!. There are wonderful medications that can help even her out and alleviate her suffering!. She would need to work closely with a physician (psychiatrist) to evaluate the effectiveness of any drug and its dose!. It's sometimes difficult to get the meds right, but it can be done!.

It's wonderful that you and her mom are working together on this!. I applaud both of you!.

At times, a person who has bipolar disorder may feel very happy, full of energy and able to do anything!. The person might not even want to rest when he or she feels this way!. This feeling is called mania (say: "may-nee-ah")!. At other times, a person who has bipolar disorder may feel very sad and depressed!. The person may not want to do anything when he or she feels this way!. This is called depression!. People with bipolar disorder can quickly go from mania to depression and back again!.

Other signs of mania may include the following:
Feeling very irritable or angry
Thinking and talking so fast that other people can't follow your thoughts
Not sleeping at all
Feeling very powerful and important
Having trouble concentrating
Spending too much money
Abusing alcohol and drugs
Having sex without being careful to prevent pregnancy or disease

Other signs of depression may include the following:
No interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy, including sex
Feeling sad or numb
Crying easily or for no reason
Feeling slowed down, or feeling restless and irritable
Feeling worthless or guilty
Change in appetite; unintended change in weight

It could be simply how she is as a teenager right now!.
The mania and depression are possible signs of bi-polar!. Bi-polar can present other symptoms, but vary a lot from person to person!. I think the best thing you can do is send her to a therapist who will know more about the disease and if she needs treatment!.
If during the "mania" she does any dangerous activity, or during the "depression" seems suicidal or self-harms, get her help right away! Either way, I think she should be checked out by a professional!.

I'd say rule out casual drugs first, like MJ and alcohol!. Some folks are even very sensitive to those power drinks like Red Bull and whatnot!.

I was wrongly diagnosed at that fragile age (where the world turns to total stress) and the prescriptions messed my brain that I've been messed ever since!. They call me a "consumer survivor" and if I could I would sue the hell out of every psychiatrist that saw me!.

Now I volunteer with people who have REAL bipolar!. It's very evident!.

I'd just have to say to be careful!.

Take her to a specialist!.!.!.They can sift through her symptoms, and tell HER whether she is suffering from a mentally illness!. You have to seek help first!. Oh, by the way, it occurs in 1% of the population, ( pretty common)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

PMS!?

bring her to the theraptist, they'll know what's wrong with her!.

however, bipolar runs in the family, or if she had a HUUGE shock (ex: someone close to her died)
but therapist works very well!.

i would know!. my mom and brother is bipolar!. :D

good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Just take her to get screened!. Is she an intelligent person who would strongly resist any suggestion that there might be something wrong with her!? That's one of the signs!. Bi-polar people often hate the idea of losing out on the manic stagesWww@Answer-Health@Com

at nineteen that is pretty normal behavior!.!.!. if she is still doing that at 25, then you might have something to be concerned about!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
