Because no one bothered changing the wording after it being considered "legal"!.
If you're really irritated by it, try inventing a new phrase, and start using it, you'd be surprised by how fast a new trend can catch on once the right people notice it!.

committing doesn't necessarily have to be in the act of a crime!. You commit to love someone, to a job, basically to commit is to do as you say!. It is a verb!. The act of, kind of!. Look it up in the dictionary!.you are right though in most contexts it is taken negatively!. But people also commit themselves to God!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
I think it's just that it's always been called committing suicide so it's stuck!.
My question is that how could suicide ever really be a crime!. I get that if you survived they could do something!. If you succeeded what exactly are they going to do to you!?
