Yes and no!. It can make a difference in recognizing the subtle clues when a person is heading towards a relapse!. Also in some states the drug treatment and mental health are two distinctive systems!. (I am very familiar in FL about how to get a person in the hospital for mental health problems!. but clueless on how the drug and alcohol programs work or how to get a person admitted!.)

The no part is we as human beings respond to how we feel!. If we feel bad we can do certain things with friends to feel better!. If we feel really depressed we can see a psychiatrist or counselor and talk about how and why we are feeling that way!. Perhaps get medications!. An addict is used to having the way they feel changed in a moment!. They never work out the issue that causes them to use!. They can stop using but emotional triggers are still there!. AA or NA provides a great support group but does not deal with core issue!.

The reality is that using drugs or alcohol is a symptom of something causes us pain!. Until that is resolved, relapse is always possible!. A very good counselor would address both issues!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have been an RN for over 35 years!. I started in Neuro and ended up in Alcohol and Drug!. I have had good success with working with addicts and have had many tell me I helped them!.
I tell new people that I worked in Neuro for 10 years without once hitting myself in the head and the same is true for A&D!. The recovering nurses and councilors like to think that you have to be an addict to treat one!. But that is just another symptom of the addiction - the belief that you are a special person just because of who you are!. That in itself is an error in thinking and part of the sickness of addition!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am an addict!. I've been drug free for 6 years, though, but I'm still an addict and always will be!. I believe that if I had not dealt with the outpatient rehab counselors, I would have had a harder time quitting!. My counselor had been there and done that, so he knew how to react to me when i would cry or panic or whatever the case!. I think you could probably understand to a small point, but would be very difficult to fully comprehend the situation!. Al-Anon is a great source for family or friends of a drug addict!. If they have AA where you are, they should have Al-Anon!. My mom went to it and it changed her reaction to me!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

physical symptoms of withdrawal you have to understand

It's possible to sympathize if you're not addict!. But it's much harder to really truly understand how hard what they're going through is if you've never been addicted to something!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think so!. I have a few addicts in my family and as compassionate and understanding as I am, I just don't understand their addiction!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You don't have to be an addict, but you do have to be able to understand one!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
